He has run out of ways to hurt him and show how he feels on Sai's pale white skin that bruises so easily that it surprises him when the next day his exposed stomach, muscled and firm, is littered with bruises, dark purples and blues.

Sai doesn't want anything to escape.
He grapples at every tiny scrap of emotion that flits by like it's a butterfly, fleeting and beautiful. He locks them away deep inside himself, denying to everyone that these feelings existed, even though they crawl up inside him and scrabble at his eyes, wanting to leave this hot dungeon that swells with breath.

Naruto always is surrounded by a thousand butterflies, because he makes Sai feel so much that his dead eyes feel like they're about to burst with emotion.
