Summary: Charlie drabble, lets face it, we all love him!

The small dip in the sand was warm and he curled up in it, his warmth filling the smallness. Charlie closed his eyes and listened to the murmurs from the camps, from the small fires that had small families gathered around them, wishing he had someone to be there for him.

The moon was rising full and it sparkled on the water that he stared over, glittering like millions of tiny diamonds scattered across the surface. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the sounds; there was a different language being spoken, probably from the Asian couple he had seen earlier, but mostly there was just the rise and fall of reassuring voices.

He wiggled his foot and felt for the small bag hidden in his shoe; just the fact that it was there made him sigh silently with relief; along the shore a wave broke, sending a gentle spray of mist to moisten his face.

A rumble and roar broke through the night and there was a great sound of breaking foliage. Charlie sat up quickly and looked to the forest where the trees were bending and breaking along the edge, the families gathered along the main fire, all staring out into the dark expanse to try to see what it was and he laughed silently. There was no way that thing would let them see it without having a couple humans for dinner.

Still, he carefully walked over to the main group to join his fellows to stand against the creature of the forest. There was a short period of absolute silence, right after the sounds of the monster faded away and the people were too afraid to start talking; then there was a burst of fearful, excited chatter and he wandered back to his spot to think.

His heart was beating quickly and he glanced around to make sure that there was nobody watching, then he pulled off his shoe, opened the packet, and put a small bit of the powder in his nostril before inhaling.

The frown of confusion faded to one of bliss, and yet he could still hear the screams and footsteps of the monster as he started up at the stars. He stretched a hand up.

"Come here little star," he cooed but no matter how much he coaxed, it refused to be held and he shook a fist at it. No one even noticed that he was gone, of course who would?

His thoughts fell back to the families around him, at least, even in this time of fear, they had each other. He had no one. He wept silently for himself, not allowing a single tear to fall through his hardened mask.

"Be brave," he whispered, and fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the waves.
