Duncan eyed the little dark haired girl in his arms, not sure what he was supposed to be doing.
"So, wife, love of my life, it took you 9 hours to push this little thing out?" He posed with the quite indifference of a man, after all how could they understand the pain and torture?
"Dear god Duncan, would it kill you to have some class? Pass my daughter to me before I find the strength to get up and-
He cut her off with a smooth kiss, prying her mouth open. Duncan found the need to taste her, to make sure that she was okay despite the hard painful birth and found his consolation in her kiss.
"Are you alright now? Has the bleeding stopped?" The only thing that betrayed him was the quiver, a small slight quiver in his deep baritone of a voice. Gwen's almond eyes found his and softened, the roundness of them giving him better consolation than any words could give.
This was how the marriage worked, it was physical. Kisses worked better, her gentle sultry moans gave him more of a clue than any long speeches could.
"Duncan, I'm fine now. She's here and now we're a family. Complete with us."
"Don't forget about the other two waiting for us, they'll be so happy to know that they have a real little sister. " He brushed his wife's flushed cheeks as she laughed, a light tingling sound that he hadn't heard since she had found out about the pregnancy.
The birth of their third daughter didn't go smoothly, after the birth of her two twins the doctors didn't recommend any more children. Gwen's small frame mad childbearing difficult but she pushed for it
Most of the time she spent in and out of the hospital, some days she'd come back weeping uncontrollably but he was there. Duncan would wrap his arms around her, put a hand on her stomach as whisper "Everything's going to ok. We won't let this child die."
And he, Duncan, was now the birth father of a beautiful baby girl.
"She's more perfect than I could imagine, Duncan, she has your eyes." Here hold your daughter. She lifted the tiny body of the child and placed one of Duncan's large hands behind her neck.
"Now slid you other hand, there see it's not rocket science."
Duncan cradled her, not failing to notice the likeness of his woman in this tiny tiny child. He brushed back a strand of black hair and he knew.
"Hey, beautiful, minus the sexy teal eyes you looked just like this as a kid didn't you?"
It was a question without being a question. He knew, some deep part of him stirred and he bitterly regretted not knowing her when she could have used him the most.
"Yea I did." Her reply was short, precise with the tone of a person who has come to terms with the shit that happened in her past.
"Duncan, the past is the past. You are my future, you and the twins and now this new baby. I can't change what happened in the past but I can see my future."
"I know Gwen. Let's just go home."
"Duncan… Please." Her voice held a tinge of desperation; they'd had this same "argument" too many times and she didn't want it to ruin her day with her new daughter.
Again, he quieted her with a kiss. Duncan knew he would upset her if he continued so he took it in stride.
"Come beautiful, it's time for us to go home. I don't know about you but I don't need you to start flashing people with… well you know." He winked mischievously at her, lightening the mood with his easy gentle banter.
They would have the same argument again, both knew it but for now they'd forget about it.
They'd bask in their light of their gentle love, taking things on step at a time.
