"This isn't fair."
This was the phrase that seemed to now pour from his mouth like a litany, as he stared at the his hand, and the four pathetic coins that now rested there. He sighed when his stomach growled loudly, to let him know that it was still empty...Thus furthering his own misery.
"Lord, why does this keep happening?" Abel Nightroad muttered, as he reluctantly put the coins back into his wallet, and sighed dejectedly. He jumped when someone tossed something at him; yelping when it hit him right in the face.
"Not very attentive, are you priest?" a man's voice asked, somewhat contemptibly. With surprise, Abel looked up, and saw that a dark-clothed man was standing there; the expression on his face unreadable, even as his eyes narrowed in contempt.
"I...uh...!" Abel stammered, then looked down and saw that a wrapped sandwich now lay in his lap.
"God bless you! Thank you for this meal!" Abel said, pleased that now he finally had something to eat.
"Better than listening to you whine." the man muttered, as he turned to walk away.
"Wait! Wait just a moment!" Abel called, as he scrambled to his feet, and jogged after the man.
"What?" the man asked, impatiently.
"If I may, could I ask for some directions? I have just recently come here to fill a vacancy in the clergy, and have gotten myself a bit turned around. Could you tell me where the church is from here?" Abel questioned; earning himself a skeptical glance from the man.
"If you're indeed from Rome...from the Vatican...wouldn't it have made sense for them to have provided you with directions? And a map?" the man in turn asked. Abel only gave him an embarrassed smile.
"Well...I kind of lost my map earlier..." Abel said, sheepishly. It was then that he took a good hard look at the man before him. He was a pale-skinned fellow, who had piercing grey eyes and dark brown hair. His clothes weren't those of a normal person, however; black armor glistened in the afternoon sunlight, and a long cloak was draped on his shoulders. A black traveler's hat shielded his face from the sun; casting a long shadow that would have made his expression indecipherable, were he not close enough to see it. The only hints of color he wore was a deep blue pendant on a cord around his neck, and a matching one on his hat.
"He must be a Vampire Hunter...If that is indeed the case, then he's as unfamiliar with this town as I am!" Abel mused, as he hid a wary glance at the sword the man carried behind a look of bewildered curiosity.
"It seems as though the Vatican is still allowing incompetents to join. Things truly have not changed much...even after all this time." the Hunter grumbled, then added, "The place you are seeking is about a block from here, on the left. If you walk past it, it's your own fault."
"Thanks again." Abel said, gratefully; wisely ignoring the jab the Hunter had thrown about his being incompetent. Without another word, the Hunter walked away.
"Such a strange fellow..." Abel thought, smiling slightly when two other Hunters joined the unusual Good Samaritan (and as one started berating him about walking off without telling anyone).
"But I have the feeling our paths will cross again, one day."
Little did Abel realize that his gut feeling would be proven right, in the not-so-distant future...

Author's Note!
Yeah, this probably doesn't make too much sense, but this is a first 'attempt' at a Trinity Blood fic! Hope it wasn't too weird!
