FAR ENOUGH
The warm wind caresses his face as he sits there, legs dangling over the edge of the roof. The sun was setting over the buildings in his vision, yet already the lights of Vegas are easily visible, the tacky neon signs, the headlights and brake lights of cars as they whizzed by on the streets below. It isn't too far below, but far enough. Far enough below for him to feel that sun setting, to feel the wind, to feel weightless. Or is he far enough up? It's kind of a half empty half full kind of thing, really. But who really cares whether or not the glass is half empty? Drink what's left. Who cares if he's far enough up? He doesn't know.
All he knows is the wind he feels is brushing away the worry that no one cares he's far enough up. The feeling that it would just be so easy to stay up here forever. To lose himself in the music that's playing through his headphones, and to listen to it forever. Forever. What is forever? Is there such a thing? He doesn't know that either. All he knows is the music in his ears, the wind, the sun, the lights. He knows the concrete, but barely. He's weightless, floating on something, but nothing. Maybe he's on a cobweb, suspended in time. Or maybe not. He also knows he's far enough up, and he might as well finish what's left in that glass.
He wants to drink what's left. To break that cobweb. He knows he's far enough up, and he knows it's far enough below. He wants to just let go. He almost does, almost debates just sliding off, slipping into a true forever, if there is one. But he stays there, letting the wind touch his face as he stares out.
The sun has almost completely set by now, and he's almost positive his shift starts n 30 minutes. The tune in his ears has changed, leaving him wondering when the last song ended. He's still humming softly to himself, still suspended on the cobweb, still thinking about that glass. Thinking about how far everything is.
And he wants to let go of whatever's he holding onto.
He just doesn't know what it is.
