The Bracelet:

Alex fooled around with the bracelet on her wrist... It was the only thing she had left of the brunette detective she had loved so much.

She fumbled with the pink and blue beads on it and closed her eyes, remembering the day she got it.

She and Olivia had been walking to court, going through Olivia's statement when they passed a stand. Not that this one was different or anything, but the courthouse was just around the corner and there was more than enough time before the arraignment.

Right next to the stand stood a dirty man with a raggedy beard. Had they been in a rush that day, they would have never noticed him, but Olivia did, and since he had with him shoe-shining supplies, she decided that today she might as well. So she sat down on one of those smelly-looking chairs that Alex highly disapproved of and went over the case file for the millionth time that day.

When the peddler was done, they browsed through the stand, just your average N.Y.C. tourist dupe with the I 3 NY T-shirts and Mets and Yankee caps. And then she saw the bracelet. It was pink and a dark navy blue, the exact color of her power suit, with a big chunky glass bead in the center, clear and transparent with dots of the same colors. Alex reached for her wallet and looked inside, noticing she was out of cash.

She had every intention of leaving and going straight to their destination, forgetting the bracelet and focusing on the much more important trial.

But that was when Olivia handed the vendor a crisp five-dollar bill taking the bracelet and placing it in Alex's palm. Alex blushed furiously knowing she made much more in a week than Olivia did in an entire month and said "Thanks… You didn't have to." Olivia kissed Alex on the cheek and said "It was only five dollars."

Now Alex –No, Emily sat at her lonely cubicle in an insurance agency in Wisconsin. She clutched the bracelet and let out a silent sob. It was worth much more than just "five-dollars."
