Miranda died a year before the tornado and her parents live in Mexico. Gordo lives in NYC. Lizzie and Gordo are 15 at the beginning of the story and at the end when they get married they are 18.

THE TORNADO

The wind blew for 24 hours. They lay on the mattresses in the cellar and listened to the house being blown apart above them. Sleep was impossible. What with the noise of things crashing about and the eerie animal like howl of the wind.
Lizzie thought about her room. The pictures on the walls, the drawer that held most of her prized possessions, her diaries, and letters from Gordo.
She began to cry silently as she thought of them all being blown up into the sky, coming down miles away to be picked up and read by any stranger.
She wished this tornado wasn't happening. She wanted to be sound asleep in her bed with no storm. Her dad was at work and she hoped that he was okay. She was glad that her mom and brother were there with her. She wept for the animals on their huge farm. Her favorite horse could be gone. Her dad could be gone. Her brother Matt was crying in their mom's lap hoping his dad is all right. The storm lasted for hours and when it was over they couldn't open the cellar doors. They sat there after trying to open the doors for hours. Her brother wanted their dad. Lizzie wanted her dad and Gordo. Her mom wanted to get out of the cellar. They ran out of food one week later.
Later on in NYC: Gordo says Mom I haven't heard from Lizzie since the tornado. What if she is hurt, lost, or maybe even dead? Gordo's mom says do you want to take a plane and go find her. Sure I'd love to. Are you sure I can? Yes I'm sure. Gordo travels to Kansas and goes to Lizzie's farm. He finds nothing but rubble. He looks in the holes everywhere and finds Lizzie's horse. He took the hurt horse to the vet. The horse was hurt very badly. He was hurt so badly the vet didn't think he would make it.

Gordo continued his search for another week and he then heard someone yelling out," HELP US. WE NEED HELP." He tracked the voice and then found Lizzie but her mom and brother were very ill. Matt couldn't walk or talk. Gordo was a doctor in training and he told her that he was gone. Her mom desperately needed an emergency doctor. Lizzie just needed food. Gordo put Lizzie's mom on the horse and rode her all the way to the ER. Her mom lived but was in intensive care.

She was at the hospital for two more months and during those months Lizzie and Gordo were rebuilding and they fond a spot in their backyard to bury Matt.

They spotted her dad's car on the side of the road under a tree. They got an ambulance over right away. But it was too late. He had been dead for about two weeks already so Lizzie and Gordo found a spot to bury him right next to Matt and they had a funeral for them once Lizzie's mom was out of the hospital.

They got the house rebuilt and they got the farm rebuilt. Gordo went home a month later and they were talking and keeping in touch for two months and then Gordo and his mom surprised Lizzie by moving back to Kansas.

Lizzie and Gordo got married three years later and had three kids. They named them Matt Jr., Sam Jr., and David/Gordo Jr. Matt Jr. was named after Lizzie's brother Matt, Sam Jr. was named after Lizzie's dad, and David/Gordo Jr. was named after Gordo. They were proud of the names they chose. They told all their children that and how they still have that horse. They rebuilt everything. They got more animals and they were glad they accomplished so much in that period of time.
