It was the summer after junior year. Veronica was working at Java the Hut that night, and Logan had been shooed out of the lounge area by some pissed off manager. After kissing Veronica goodbye, he realized that it had been almost a month since he had last talked to Dick Casablancas, his supposed best friend.

He flipped open his phone and called him.

"Dick! Hey, it's me."

"Logan?" the voice on the other line asked groggily.

"Yeah! Hey, I haven't talked to you in a while. How have you been?"

"I'm fine, I'm fine…" Logan heard shuffling and Dick mumbling something.

"What? I can't hear you…"

"I said, WHY THE HELL DID YOU CALL ME SO EARLY?"

Logan checked his car clock and laughed. "Dick, it's 4:30."

"I was up late last night," Dick grumbled.

"With Madison?"

"That bitch? Naw, that was over a long time ago. No, Lucky came over and we played Tony Hawk for a while."

They eventually decided that Logan would go over to Dick's and try to beat Lucky's high score, although Dick warned him it was grossly high.

As Dick and Logan sat playing, Logan's phone started to buzz. He pulled it out and started texting whoever it was back.

"Whozzat?" Dick asked, leaning over to see. Logan held it out for him. The text read: "HEY GRLFRIEND WUT U UP 2"

"Some girl keeps text messaging me thinking I'm her friend, so I keep text messaging her back," Logan explained.

"Huh," Dick sat. "Is she hot?"

"I think she's like, fourteen," Logan replied. He hit "SEND" on his phone, and the message "I'M FINE GRLFREND JUST HANGIN" was sent off into cyberspace, or phonespace, or something. A couple of seconds later the phone vibrated again. Logan sighed heavily and took it out of his pocket and Dick leaned forward excitedly to see what it read.

"OK BFF CALL ME IF U WANT 2 HANG"

"Bee…eff…eff?" Dick asked, confused. "What does that even mean?"

"It means 'best friends forever,'" a quiet figure said from the door. Logan and Dick turned around and saw Beaver, Dick's kid brother.

"Did I tell you you could stand in my doorway?" The figure shrugged in moved away.

"Just trying to help," it mumbled.

After Beaver was safely out of earshot, Dick leaned in close to Logan and slapped a hand on his back, "So, I guess you're kind of my bff, then."

Logan smiled quietly and tried to ignore the lump that was suddenly stuck in his throat. "I guess so, Dick."

Dick leaned away and turned back to the game. "Cool," he said.

Logan grinned and said, "Let's never go so long without talking again, man."

Dick said, "Sure, whatever," and did a kicklfip over two skyscrapers.
