It was a warm Spring day when she softly knocked on his door.
"Come in." He spoke, focused on his paperwork from their previous case. She walked in and shut the door quietly behind her.
"Uh, sir?" Her voice broke a little, like she had been crying. He looked up immediately.
"Is everything ok?" He asked as he stood up, ready to be by her side if need be. She nodded.
"Yes, sir. I'm fine. Just a lot on my mind." She paused for a moment. "I just came to…." She bit her bottom lip. He didn't say anything, he just waited for her to continue. "I want to put in my resignation." She spoke quietly. She studied his reaction. He was emotionless but inside his whole world crashed around him.
"M-May I ask why?"
"I just want to get out of this place before I lose who I am. I want to get a normal life, start a family."
"Is there anything I can do to change your mind?" She wanted to say 'Only if you say you love me, like I love you' but shook her head instead. She gave up that dream a long time ago. He tried his best to remain professional about it. He wanted to pull her into his arms and say 'I love you, please stay' but he knew there was no chance of it. He just nodded slightly. "Uh, yeah. I'll let Strauss know."
"Thank you, sir." They stood in silence, unable to think of what to say. A few years ago, after she had unknowingly saved his life, he decided one day, no matter what, he would tell her how he felt.
Today was the day.
"Well, if there's nothing else…" She walked back over to the door and placed her hand on the knob.
"Pen, wait." She froze in place. That was the second time he ever called her Pen. She removed her hand and faced him.
"Sir?" He sighed and walked over to her until he stood in front of her, only inches away from her. She swallowed hard. He suddenly wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. She tensed for a moment but then melted in his touch.
"I love you, Penelope Garcia. And no matter what, I will stand by your decision. I just want you to know that before you leave." A few tears fell from her eyes.
"Those are the only words that would make me stay. I love you too Aaron." She loved how his name tasted when she spoke it. It took just about ten years for them to realize that their feelings for each other were mutual. Today was the day they began their lives together.
