Indulgence

"Do you remember chocolate?"

Everett opens his eyes.

"Yeah. Why?"

TJ cocks her head and weaves her fingertips through his chest hair.

"No reason."

He watches her draw little round patterns on his skin.

"Reese's Cups," he says.

She stops, stares at him, then smiles.

"How'd you know?"

He braces his arms behind his head and she leans forward and kisses him.

"Dunno," he shrugs. "They're round."

"Were."

He shakes his head. "Will be."

"Oh, right." She props her chin up on his chest. "Volker thought we went back in time. Reese's Cups haven't been invented yet."

"Or peanut butter."

"Or maybe even chocolate."

His left hand moves to gently stroke her forearm with the back of his fingers.

"What a sad world they all live in."

"Mmhmm. At least we have the memories."

"And Becker! Thank goodness we have Becker!"

She nods and curls up next to him, resting her cheek on his chest.

"Who knew? Bean butter that tastes almost exactly like peanut butter. The color's not there yet…"

"Red peanut butter!"

"… and we're still minus the chocolate."

He moves his other arm to grasp her hand, intertwining their fingers. "I can't even remember what it tastes like, really," he sighs.

"Peanut butter?"

"And chocolate, both. I remember I used to love it."

"Seriously? You were a chocolate fiend?"

He laughs. "Like you wouldn't believe."

She giggles, then falls silent as she watches his fingers caress hers.

Finally she looks up at him.

"I don't really miss it," she says.

"Me neither."

She nods. "I wonder whether we'll ever have something like Valentine's Day here on Novus."

"Could be Varro's Day."

"Could be."

"Red bean butter hearts."

"Coyote puppies. Forest bears. Purple sweet potato flower bouquets."

She laughs and kisses him.

"And lots and lots of this," she whispers, as she straddles his hips again.
