It was just another late night at the diner. No business. Not a person in sight. Why was Ruby still there? The time finally came for her to close up. Just as she turned to walk away from the locked door, someone spoke up. Somewhat annoyed, somewhat disappointed.
"Your closed. Aww." It was none other than Dr. Whale.
"Yeah. Sorry. We closed 20 seconds ago." Ruby said earning a chuckle. Just as Whale was about to walk away, Ruby spoke up again. "Wait! I mean, I do have a key to open up." She smiled sweetly.
"Why thank you. You don't have to do that. It's late on a Friday. I'm sure you have other places to be." Whale said apologetically, but seriously wishing she didn't have anywhere to be.
"No. Not all. I'm sure! I want to. So. What can I get you?" She smiled walking back into the dreadful diner.
"A glass of water for now, please? Thank you."
"No problem. I'll be right back with that." The girl smiled sweetly. Her feelings she's tried to push back for so long, finally came back. They're alone, in the diner, late at night. She came back with the glass. "Anything else?"
"Yeah. You." Whale whispered, while taking a sip of water, praying she didn't hear him.
"I'm sorry, could you repeat that please?" She asked in disbelief of what she just heard.
"Um. I said. Um. I'd like a burger. Um." He said choking on his gulp of water.
"You ok, there? I know CPR." The girl joked, and looked at Whale.
"I'm fine. Thank you." He laughed.
"Oh. Ok. Uh, I'm gonna go get you that burger." She walked into the back, trying not to cry. Yet, she was unsuccessful and let out a quiet sob. Only, it wasn't quiet enough.
Whale rushed over to where Ruby was. "Hey. Hey. It's ok. Shh." He tried to calm his friend down. "What's wrong love. Care to talk about it?" She only shook her head, and managed to stop crying.
"Thank you." Her voice was filled with sincerity. "Now." She swallowed. "I should probably go make your burger."
"I don't really want a burger, though." Whale admitted.
"Ok. What would you like?" She asked with tears still falling slightly.
"You." His voice was confident this time. He stepped closer to Ruby. "I want you." Their faces were so close.
"You want me? What? What are you-" Whale shut Ruby up by pressing his lips to hers.
"I. Want. You. Us. There needs to be an us." And there was.
