"Team, report to the conference room," came Batman's voice over the Mountain's intercom system.

The team, most of whom had been relaxing in the rec room, looked at each other in surprise. It was a Thursday, so whatever Batman needed them for couldn't be a mission. The team was only assigned midweek missions when the fate of a nation or the entire planet was at stake (teenage superheroes still have school, after all). Then there was the odd request to meet in the conference room. Missions were assigned in the main cave, where Batman could utilize the Mountain's holographic computer for any needed data or visual aids.

The team quickly gathered in front of the doors to the conference room. The doors slid open to reveal three people - Batman, and two other young men. One looked like Robin, but his mask was a slightly different shape and his costume was vastly different. Gone was the cape and the bright yellows and reds; instead, his all black suit was broken only by the bright blue bird on his chest. He smiled and did a little wave at the team. The other boy, who none of them recognized, wore Robin's costume but stood more defensively, with his arms crossed over his chest. The whole team could tell: he wanted to seem just as serious and imposing as the Bat, but his posture spoke more of insecurity than strength.

"Team," Batman spoke. "Robin has learned a great deal from me as well as from each of you. He has passed the mantle of Robin on to the next young hero and has decided to call himself Nightwing. Both Robin and Nightwing will continue to serve as members of this team until such time as they, and each of you, are considered ready to join the ranks of the Justice League."

With that, Batman turned and left the conference room through the other set of doors, pausing only briefly to place a hand on Robin's and Nightwing's shoulders.

Once the door had closed behind him, the team approached Robin and Nightwing, gathering around the pair. After shaking Robin's hand and welcoming him to the team, Kaldur turned to Nightwing. "My friend," he started, "why have you changed your name? Were you not happy as Robin?"

Nightwing shook his head and smiled. "Nah, I loved being Robin. But me and Bats both agreed it was time I started protecting people on my own as a new hero. Robin will always be Batman's partner. If I ever want criminals to take me seriously, I needed to make a new name for myself."

The new Robin snorted. "Yeah, 'cause that was the only reason."

Nightwing laughed and punched Robin in the shoulder, ignoring the glower Robin sent back. "Shut it, shorty."

Kaldur frowned. "I do not understand. What other reason could you have?"

Nightwing rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed. "I sort of... outgrew a lot of the things Batman needs Robin to be able to do..."

Wally's eyes narrowed for a moment, before they widened and he let out a laugh. "You got stuck in an air duct, didn't you?!" Nightwing blushed slightly and Wally began laughing harder. "You did! You totally got stuck in an air duct!" he chortled.

Robin smirked. "You should have seen his face when Batman had to rescue him. I thought he was gonna blow a gasket!"

By now, everyone was chuckling, and Nightwing crossed his arms, pouting momentarily before smiling sheepishly. Wally slapped him on the back, hard, before slinging an arm around Nightwing's neck. "Cheer up, dude, look at it this way: at least we can't call you tiny anymore!"

A/N: Meh, I'm not too happy with the ending, but now I have an image of Dick stuck in an air duct to cheer me up :)

I see this story happening around the end of Team Year 3. I'm thinking Dick would be about 17, Jason maybe 14...
