"Edward!" I called out.
"Yes, love?" He appeared beside me.
"You have a medical degree, right?" I asked.
"Yes…"
"Umm….I kinda hurt myself." I said, blushing.
He looked me over once. "I don't see anything. Why didn't you just go to Carlisle?"
"Because I wouldn't be comfortable with him looking at it while I'm conscious." My cheeks flamed and Edward sat beside me on the piano bench Emmett had perched me on.
"Why?" He looked rather suspicious.
"Because it's rather close to my chest." I whispered the last.
"How did you manage that?" He asked, his voice choked up.
"Well, Emmett decided he wanted to wash his Jeep. I tripped over a sponge he dropped and fell into the side mirror." I explained.
"Let me see it." He said reluctantly.
I started to take off
my shirt. I was just about to reach the bikini top I had donned to
help Emmett wash it when he made a sound halfway between a choke and
a groan.
"You sure you don't want me to just knock you out
and call Carlisle?" He asked, his voice strained again.
"Edward Anthony Masen Cullen!" I placed my hands on my bare hips. "If you can't handle this, call Alice. But then I'll give her license to mock you for the rest of our eternal lives." I glared at him.
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Fine. How bad is it?"
"If I knew, would I ask you?" Sarcasm was becoming heavy with me. Probably a mix of pain and irritation. "But Emmett had to carry me in here."
"Then your ribs may be bruised. With your luck, they may be broken." He teased, trying to lighten my mood.
"You
should be a comedian." I pulled my shirt off in one fluid motion
before he could stop me. He gasped again, for a different reason
this time. His cool fingers ran over my side, eliciting goosebumps
and an overly excited heartbeat. It didn't' care that I was
injured and Edward was a doctor. He was mine and he was touching me. That's all it cared about. I looked down to where he had rested
his fingers lightly. His fingers, pale as snow, normally were close
to my own skin tone. Instead, they stood out in the purple and black
bruise that had formed over my right side.
"Oh my gosh." I
gasped. "A mirror did that?"
"No." He responded. "A set of bruised ribs did. I'd say at least two. Maybe three." He pressed lightly and I cried out as the pain shot through my side.
"Yeah, three. Bed rest for you. A week, maybe five days if you're good." He said.
"I'm sure I'll be an angel." I smiled. "Can I spend it here?"
"Alice." Edward said in normal tones. Alice appeared by his elbow.
"I already called Charlie and explained the situation. He said to tell you to be more careful, and that it was all right as long as it was my bed that you stayed in." She laughed. "Doesn't he realize that Edward would have joined you even if you were in my bed?"
"Nope." We said together and shared a smile.
"You're going to have to carry me." I told him. He smiled my favorite crooked smile and picked me up, careful not to injure my ribs further.
"Sounds
good to me." He told me as he placed me on his bed after running
to his room at vampire speed. "Can I get you anything?"
"Just
your handsome butt in this bed right now." I said with a smile.
He scooted in and placed a hand on the skin, my own personal icepack. It was better than a bag of frozen corn any day. Really, it was all I needed. My stomach grumbled.
Well, except maybe food.
