"Rose!"

Pearl pushed herself off the ground to her knees. Time seemed to stop as she took in the chaos around her. Gem after Gem was shattered and poofed as the battle field exploded into flames around her.

"I have to…. Find her…"

The only thought on the pearl's mind was to find Rose Quartz. Her mentor, her savor, her love? Pearl shook the thought from her head. A battle was no place to think about feelings.

Time started again as a homeworld ship flew above, deploying a new wave of quartz soldiers. The small gem struggled to her feet, gaining the attention of a particularly large Onyx.

Pearl felt her feet leave the ground as she was grabbed by the collar of her shirt.

"Well what do we have here?" Onyx sneered.

Pearl struggled against her hold. She tried to reach the gemstone on her head. If she could just summon her spear.

"Uh uh uh". The soldier taunted, pulling her arm back down.

The Onyx eyed the pearl on her head.

"You ain't a diamonds pearl are you?".

Pearl didn't respon. She narrowed her eyes and stared at the Onyx with pure hatred.

"When a pearl is asked something it answers".

"I would never answer to a gem like you!" Pearl screamed, her anger reaching its peak.

The quartz soldier scowled and released her grip. Pearl winced as her back hit the hard ground.

"I pearl must raise her voice to a quartz".

Onyx pulled up her shorts. Pearl eyed the black gemstone on her thigh.

"This is what a real gemstone looks like Pearl".

She laughed as she pulled a long string of light from the stone. Pearl watched her swing it around her head as it formed into a large flail.

"And I'm gonna use it to teach you a lesson about respect".

Pearl squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the impact of the large, spiked, weight.

"I'm sorry Rose. I wasn't strong enough to protect you".

When the pain of being poofed didn't come she opened her eyes a crack. Her eyes widened when she saw Onyx drop her weapon, and start grasping at the spike protruding through her chest. She let out a roar of a scream and exploded into a cloud of dust. A large periwinkle hand reached through the dust to grab the falling gemstone.

"Hey P".

Pearl looked up into the large, smiling, face of her savior.

"Bismuth!" She exclaimed. "You saved me!"

Bismuth smiled, pushing her rainbow locks out of her face.

"Could let some quartz get my favorite pearl now could I?" Bismuth joked looking down and the gem in her hand. "Wanna keep this?"

"What I really want to do is get to Rose. Have you seen her?". Pearl said getting to her feet.

"I saw her in the west". Bismuth answered pointing out across the field. "About a mile out".

"Thanks". Pearl yelled as she dashed away.

"Be careful P!"

Pearl ignored the chaos around her. All she could think about was getting to Rose Quartz. She was so focused on her thoughts she almost didn't notice the sound of crunching under her feet.

She looked down in horror at the hundreds of gem shards beneath her feet. A tear rolled down her pale cheek as she stared at all the colors reflecting in the light of the fire.

"Jade, Topaz, Sodalite, Amber, Citrine…..:

She listed off the names of the gems she recognized. These all been living crystal gems like her, like bismuth, like garnet, like…

"Rose".

She wiped away her tears. Crying wouldn't bring them back, but fighting would make sure this didn't happen to anyone else. With a heavy heart she continued to make her away across death valley.
