"Niles," Dahpne said waddling into the room.
Niles looked up.
"Yes my love," he said.
"We have to go now. The baby is due any minute."
Niles jumped up and grabbed his car keys.
"Alright. Just remember to breathe," he said, "We are in no danger-"
"Niles I'm in labor not walking the tightrope in the circus."
He put an arm around Dahpne and helped her into the car. He couldn't believe the time was almost here. Finally, he would meet his son. Niles was convinced the baby was a boy.
Dahpne was bent over in severe pain. The baby seemed to be having a wrestling match in her stomach.
"Come along," Niles said helping her into the car.
The drive to the hospital was only 15 minutes but it felt like hours. Niles raced into the hospital.
"EXCUSE ME," he yelled, "WOMAN IN LABOR HERE. We need a room."
The nurse took Dahpne into the room while Niles filled out the papers. He could hear her screaming from all the way inside the hospital room. He longed to trade places with her.
Niles wasn't allowed in the delivery room. Fathers just weren't in that hospital. He wanted to deliver in another place but this was the safest hospital for Dahpne to have the baby. It was worth it. He just had to be patient. He started thinking about his son. He couldn't wait to meet him. He loved him already. He couldn't wait to take him to the opera and art galleries. Niles hoped his son would love that as much has he did.
"Dr. Crane," the nurse said, "Congratulations. You're a father."
"When can I see him," Niles asked.
"Dr. Crane," the nurse said, "There's been an unexpected development. I know you were hoping for a son but you are the father of twin girls."
Niles' jaw dropped. He was sure that he was having a boy but he had two daughters.
"A-are you sure," Niles asked.
"Dr. Crane I've been working as a delivery nurse for 20 years," she said, "I know what girls are and I know what boys are."
"Well... I would like to see them," Niles said.
