The One That Got Away
Hannah had been completely silent and despondent as she dragged Dan home, helped him clean up and change into clean clothes, and tucked him into bed. And that sickened Dan way more than the pills prescribed to someone else he'd taken.
He wanted to say something, but his brain was mush at the moment, and he really didn't want to make things any worse.
When Hannah finally spoke, wishing him, "Good night, Dan," as she was about to leave his room, Dan broke out of his daze, the sound of his sister's voice propelling him to action.
"Hannah, wait," he pleaded, quickly reaching out to grab her wrist.
Hannah sighed long-sufferingly and turned to face her brother, "What is it, Dan?"
"I'm really sorry," he apologized, hoping she could hear the sincerity in his voice, besides how sick he felt and how he probably sounded like he was going to throw up again.
"Yeah, whatever, Dan," Hannah replied indifferently. She turned to leave again, but Dan pulled her towards him.
"What the hell, Dan?!" Hannah exclaimed, losing her balance and landing on her backside on the edge of his bed.
"I'm really sorry, Han," he pleaded again, "Please don't hate me."
Hannah looked at his – pale and sickly – face, and considered her reply carefully.
"I don't hate you, Dan. I'm just disappointed that I didn't find my soul mate," she responded, sighing again, this time dejectedly.
A weight lifted from Dan's heart and he grinned happily. "That's great! I mean, not that you didn't find your soul mate," he started blabbering, "It's great that you don't hate me, 'cause you're my best friend, and…and…," and maybe it was the effect of the drugs again, but on an impulse, Dan pulled Hannah down to him and kissed her on the lips.
Hannah stiffened reflexively at first, but didn't break the kiss, and had relaxed by the time it ended.
"What was that for?" Hannah asked, dazed, still leaning over Dan, propping herself up on his chest, their noses close enough to touch.
"I dunno'. You said it was the best kiss and the most magical moment of your life. And, I never got to tell you that it was the same for me," he replied. "Was that kiss better than Adam's?" he continued to ask, sheepishly.
Hannah's mien instantly changed at the mention of Adam's name. "Yes, definitely!" she declared without hesitation. "The nerve he had, leading me on when he knew he wasn't the one!"
As Hannah continued to ramble on in a rage against Adam, Dan smiled as he happily drifted off to sleep, glad to have his sister back to her normal self, and their special relationship as siblings restored.
