Thor heard his brother stir in the bed next to him. He stood and saw the tears streaming down Loki's face. He slowly crawled out of bed, taking his large red blanket with him. He quietly shook his brother's shoulder. He knew he was already awake, but wanted to let him know it's only his brother.
"Loki." He said softly, his hand still on his shoulder. Loki opened his green eyes. They were red and puffy, evidence of his crying.
"I am sorry, brother. Go back to sleep I will not bother you anymore." He said and went to roll over, but Thor stopped him.
"Loki, you never bother me." He said quietly. Loki began to stream more tears and leaned up to hug his older brother.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?" Thor asked him, confusion in his voice.
"For waking you. I did not mean to."
"It is alright, Loki. It was just a bad dream."
"You do not know how bad it was." Loki said into his shoulder.
"Would you like to tell me about it?" After a moment of contemplation, Loki nodded and pulled away from the hug.
"I could only watch…" he began.
Thor lay on a battlefield. The war, Loki did not know what for, was over, but his brother lay wounded and in pain. He rushed over to him and kneeled, holding his brothers limp head in his lap.
"Thor!" he yelled to him, but he didn't hear him. He had closed his eyes for the last time, taken his last breath, Loki feared.
"No!" someone yelled behind him. He turned to see their father running towards them, not noticing Loki.
"No!" he cried again when he crouched by him. He picked Thor up. Loki went to touch his arm, to tell him it was over, but Loki's hands floated through him like mist.
"Father!" Loki cried to the receding figure of Odin, but he did not turn. Loki ran after them. He followed them into the healing rooms where a healer led Odin to a cot and looked the injured Thor over.
"Is he going to be okay?" Odin asked the healer. The healer ignored him and looked over Thor once more before turning to him. She shook her head and watched in amazement at the new sight before her; a heart broken King. The King usually hid his emotions so well.
"No." Loki whispered, before the dream faded to black.
Thor now hugged his brother once more.
"It is okay, Loki. It was only a bad dream. I am fine, I sit right before you." Loki cried once more, leaning on his brother for support. Thor held him for a while before he leaned his brother back down on his bed.
"Loki, do not cry, it was only a bad dream." He repeated. "Here, take my blanket." He laid the red blanket over him. "It will protect you when you're afraid and I cannot be there for you. Nothing will hurt you, little brother. I promise."
Thor let the memory flood through him while he held his dying brother in his arms. He was pushed onto the blade that stuck out of the Elven monster he ran it through originally. He let the tears stream down his face.
"Thor." Jane said from behind him. He heard her footsteps approach and she crouched beside him.
"Thor, I am so sorry. We need to go." She whispered to him.
"I can't leave him here. My little brother. I can't leave him alone, he will be afraid." Thor replied, letting his tears flow freely. He set Loki down gently and unclasped his red cloak from his shoulders.
"I promised, Loki." He said to his brother as he laid the red cloak over his brother's body like he did those many years ago with his blanket.
He stared down at him a little longer before he turned. Rage can be clearly seen in his eyes. He was going to get revenge. He walked away, Jane following close behind, while he muttered the words once more.
"I promised."
