THE PROPOSAL

"What do you say, babe? Marry me?" Roy Anderson looked up at Pam Beesly expectantly. Was she even supposed to answer; he seemed so sure of what she'd say.

Pam gasped slightly and stared at the ring in Roy's hand. The truth was, she'd never imagined or expected to marry Roy. She'd never thought of breaking up but then again, marriage had never occurred to her. At least, not in their relationship. A whirlwind of thoughts rushed through Pam's head. They'd been dating since high school. To say no….well, Roy would just get mad. And it'd be years wasted. It wasn't as though Pam was asked out everyday. She figured Roy would be her best chance – so maybe he didn't do romantic and maybe he spent more time drinking with his friends and playing pool then he did with her. And so what if he'd only seen one of the many of her art shows and didn't like her hanging out with other people. He would keep her safe. He loved her….in his own way. If she said no now, she'd be alone for the rest of her life. Pam feared the thought. She wanted a family. She wanted to be loved. Pam looked into Roy's eyes. Was there another option? She swallowed.

"Oh, Roy….yes." She smiled shakily at him and he grinned and slipped the ring onto her finger. He threw her a quick kiss.

"Alright!" He settled down in his chair again, satisfied and concentrated on the game on TV again. She stared at him for a moment, stunned and a little hurt before turning away. The words were gone from her mouth, she couldn't take them back. She twisted the ring on her finger and couldn't help wondering if she had made the right choice. Oh well. It was too late now.

And so it began.
