The first time Jim meets Roy
Jim had just had lunch with the most beautiful woman in the world. Her eyes were sparkling and her cheeks were flushed. She had soft auburn curls and pale skin. She was friendly and sweet and kind and funny. He couldn't take his eyes off her. His cheeks hurt from smiling. They'd eaten lunch in a little café near the office and he couldn't help the thoughts that floated around his head. What if she was the one? What would her lips feel like against his? He couldn't help imagining it – soft, sweet, meaningful. Sunsets, fairy lights, berries, salty cashews, sunshine, fresh oranges, peppermint tea. Those were some of the things she made him think of. He had absolutely no idea why. They'd finished lunch and gone back to the office. He liked the way she drove, cautiously and the way her eyes kept flicking up to the review mirror.
The office seemed more dull and grey then usual after lunch. Some of his papers and pencils were scattered beside his desk and now he could see the clear line that separated his desk from Dwight's. He sighed.
"You know you could just move them instead of knocking them over." He said irritably to Dwight. Dwight ignored him and tapped something in on his keyboard, head held high. Jim muttered under his breath. His good day was ruined. The distance between his desk and the receptionist desk seemed like miles.
Roy Anderson walked into the office. He leant against Pam's desk.
"Ready, babe?" He asked. It was more of a statement then a question.
"Uh, yep, just a second." She replied timidly, grabbing her coat and bag. She was about to leave when her eyes fell on Jim.
"Oh, Jim, have you met Roy yet?" Jim walked over in long legged strides. He reached out his hand to shake Roy's when Pam spoke again.
"Jim, this is Roy Anderson, my fiancé. Roy, this is Jim."
Her fiancé. Jim crumpled to the floor, vaguely aware of the voices and phones ringing around him. He pulled his knees to his chest and buried his face in his hands. His head was spinning and as heavy as a bowling bowl. She was engaged. He didn't really do this of course. In reality, he hesitated for only a second before quickly shaking Roy's hand. Then he cleared his throat and said, in a voice unfamiliar to himself:
"Congratulations. You're a lucky man." He felt more then saw Pam's blush and only distantly heard Roy's laugh and some sort of crass comment. Then she was gone, out the door with her fiancé.
Jim sunk into his chair and laid his head on his keyboard. He brushed off Dwight's indignant voice and threats of reporting him for not working. He listened to ticking of the clock and prayed the day would just end.
She was getting married.
Hey guys. I wrote this in about 10 minutes so I know it's a bit rough. Anyway, please let me know what you thought of it!
