she was a girl of wonders.

the worlds were held in her hands and the stars often hid in her hair, appearing from behind red curtains only when the sun had dipped below the sea. there were birds that sang in her throat when she spoke, and he always heard the loveliest of songs. her eyes were certainly jewels and her skin was without mark, flawless in every discernible way. she reaches for him and he sometimes asks himself why.

he doesn't get a lot of opportunities to tell her "i love you", so when he does, he says it slowly.

again

and again

and again.

his words are quiet, a pair of chapped lips and a tired voice hovering by her ear as his calloused hands find her soft ones. his tender "i love you" falls in between kisses— one word on the top of her forehead, another in the space between her eyes, but he pauses by her lips to say the last word with care.

because to sora, the "you" is the most important.

her hands crawl to his face and his to her hips. she pulls him closer with but a tug while her fingers catch in his tousled hair. she closes the space between their lips and they kiss until he's out of breath and she's leaning on him for support; they kiss until the sunset dies and all that is left is the glory of the universe before them.

it's not so beautiful, though. behind the pretty lights and gleaming galaxies, this universe is ugly. shadows scribble on the walls and skitter on the ground and they knock at his floorboards while he's meant to be sleeping.

the worlds aren't so lucky, and neither is he— and they both know it all too well.

he looks at the star-girl in his arms and smiles, although it's obvious how pained it is. she stands on her toes— he's gotten much taller than her in recent years— and kisses the corner of his mouth, her fingers searching for his. when they're found, she holds on tight.

he had no worlds in his hands, nor stars in his hair or birds in his throat. his eyes were of the sky and he sometimes wondered if they would ever turn grey. years of war were marked on his skin and he could never seem to rid himself of the story, no matter how often his wounds were tended to with potions and bandages. light fought against darkness in a battle where only one should prevail— he still sometimes questions which side he's been fighting on. away from their little island in a little corner of the cosmos, he learned what sadness was. he felt grief and fear and sorrow, knew betrayal and envy and loss.

he tries his best to keep her away from it all.

she offers him a smile and he remembers what it's like to be alive.

"—you."
