Obsidian Trials by Sepiktik
Author's note: Get jiggy with it.
Nao lay sleeping peacefully on her futon in the basement of the Fuuka Academy church. But it was not meant to last. The shrilling of an alarm clock woke her up. She snarled and glared at it for a few seconds before switching it off, quenching her desire to smash it into bits. She wasn't made of alarm clocks, after all.
Being a nun sucked. The pay sucked. Waking up in the morning sucked. She wasn't used to waking up early. She rarely went to school on time and went outside at night to rob pedophiles. But worst of all, having to listen to other people's problems sucked. She could care less. She had enough problems of her own. And she wasn't even Christian.
Nao decided to indulge herself in a little more rest today. All of those whining people could wait. In her mind, she was not created to work. She was above work. All she had to do was make one big play and she would have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life, without lifting a finger.
A knock was heard against the basement door. Miyu's voice floated into the room, in her usual monotone. "Wake up. It is now 6:35. You are five minutes late for your duties."
Nao gritted her teeth. That mechanical doll would be content to be a nun and follow Alyssa. It would be content to be just a follower, number two. Nao hated people like that. She had to be number one. She couldn't take not being better than everybody. Upon reflecting further, however, she decided that she actually loved people like that. If everyone wanted to be a follower, then she could be a leader.
Miyu rapped again on the door. Nao grudgingly lifted herself from her futon and got dressed in her nun clothes. As she was wrapping her habit, Miyu knocked again on the door, this time with a little more force. Nao yelled, "I'm getting dressed!" Satisfied, Miyu turned away from the door and walked up the steps to the ground floor of the church for the day's preparations. A few minutes later, Nao followed.
Miyu examined the chart which recorded who was doing what and told Nao what to do. "Clean up the church. It is getting dirty."
Nao coughed a little and her nose sniffed. Seconds later, she sneezed violently. Miyu took these events into account and reconsidered her decision. "Perhaps you should return to sleep. It would not be good to have you here while you are sick. You would make the visitors sick."
Nao wasn't actually sick. She was just allergic to work. Just the thought of work made her nose stuffy. But she wouldn't tell Miyu this. Satisfied about having escaped her duties for yet another day, she returned to her bed to continue her thoughts on work.
Robbing people was easy, but she didn't have her HiME powers anymore, and she wouldn't endanger herself just to make a little money. She cursed the Obsidian Lord for stepping in. If he hadn't appeared, she would have still had her powers and would have been able to drift through her life, occasionally robbing people for money and entertainment.
Nao's eyes widened and a grin manifested on her face. She would get her revenge against the Obsidian Lord and become rich at the same time. Nao pictured herself swimming in a pool of money and tanning at the beach while sipping margaritas while the common people worked. She would sue the Obsidian Lord and then do what she wanted forever. But there was only one place where this lawsuit would float. America.
