Hermione gasped and all the commotion around her seemed to fall away. The world was momentarily frozen to Hermione. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't think. All she felt was a deep numbness spreading towards her heart.

She wanted desperately to pull her eyes away from the horrific scene but no amount of will power enabled her to do so. Hermione couldn't look away from Cedric's lifeless body. He was bruised and bloody from the unknown horrors he'd faced in the maze. His dead eyes burned into hers. There was once such warmth and love in that gaze, and now cold and unmoving. Now they were nothing but brown orbs.

His mouth hung open, as though he had been in the middle of a sentence when he was murdered. The same mouth that had only uttered kind words to her. The same mouth she had longed to kiss since she first set her eyes upon him her first year.

Harry tugged at Cedric's body, and his head swayed back and forth. She watched, entranced as Dumbledore yanked Harry off Cedric. It wasn't until Harry yelled, "He's back! Voldemort's back!" that Hermione finally took a breath again.

She watched as Cedric's father rushed from the stands and let out the most pitiful cry she had ever heard. The awful sound seemed to reawaken Hermione. Slowly, painstakingly a single tear danced down her cheek. Before she could even fathom every emotion coursing through her body, a waterfall of tears rushed down her face, blurring her vision.

She cried for his father. For Harry. For Cho and all of his friends. But most of all she cried for Cedric and the life he would never get to live.
