This is, apparently, what happens when I think about Sakura and Karin too much. Quite a departure from my usual style, but there you have it.

Sasuke does not need teammates. True, he does require assets to occupy the former Mist-nin Itachi travels with when he kills him. But Sasuke does not need teammates. A team is an unnecessary, superficial bond. Because the bond with his te—Kakashi, Naruto, and Sakura was more hindering than helpful, he discarded it.

(Just think, it could have been your charming little genin team by your side instead, whispers the voice of Orochimaru in his head)

So what if Suigetsu is loud and boisterous and more often than not the name Naruto is on his lips when he addresses the white-haired Hozuki. So what if when he looks at Karin he sees pink instead of red? So what?

(You miss them, of course. Isn't it obvious?)

They don't matter. None of them do. They can't tell him what to do anymore. Maybe Suigetsu is a little (a lot) like Naruto, and maybe Karin is a bit (exactly) like Sakura. Pure chance. He selected them for their skills, and that is all. He's not sentimental like Naruto is. In any case, quiet Juugo is nothing like Kakashi. It's a coincidence; pure chance.

(Liar, liar, liar)

Sasuke hears Karin shriek and as he looks up she drops what she's been carrying as she beats frantically at her head. "SUIGETSU!" she shrieks. "You are a fucking dead man, do you hear me? DEAD!"

"Can't take an itsy-bitsy little spider, huh?" Suigetsu taunts, and promptly turns to water as a kunai passes through his forehead. "Woaaah there, straight to drastic measures! Let's fight, then." The ex-Kiri nin's smile holds the promise of pain as he re-solidifies and unstraps Kubikirihocho from his back. Karin is undaunted.

This conduct is entirely unbefitting of soldiers under his command. They are shinobi, not five-year-olds.

"Karin. Suigetsu." Sasuke says, and they quiet immediately. "We're leaving."

"What—already?" the Hozuki says, aghast, as Sasuke rises to his feet. "But we just got here!"

"Let's go."

(Running away, Sasuke-kun? Even from your own mind. How very… futile. But very like you, I suppose.)

Sasuke does not need teammates. Equals… he has to be the strongest. He has no place for teammates. An avenger walks a lonely road; there can only ever be those who are below him, and those who must die. Assets, though…

"Hey, are we leaving, or are we just planning to stand here until your brother dies of old age?"

Assets. He can work with that.
