Keep The Demons At Bay

A/N: This is another VMars drabble-y ficlet. It's part of a massive update—new stories, and new chapters. I would say this is probably post-season 3, post-finale, whatever you want to call it. Enjoy! R&R! Thanks. –Mac

Keep The Demons At Bay

Veronica woke with a start, a silent scream caught on her lips. She was tangled in her sheets and drenched in sweat. For a week straight she had been waking in up each night, shaken by the same nightmare. Flashes of every bad memory she had experienced, which lingered long after she returned to consciousness.

Aaron Echolls, an arm raised to strike. Lilly Kane, sprawled, bloody, lifeless…

A dark night, staring down the barrel of a gun, the sky erupted into fire, then silence…

All the while she was enveloped in a heavy haze, she was aware of the world moving along around her, but she remains still making no progress. She can't control her actions, she can't stop it…then black.

There is only one thing that she couldn't shake. The overwhelming terror that settled in her stomach and didn't go away even when she woke up. She tried to remember the last time she felt safe and protected.

That was how she had ended up at his door at three in the morning. She was huddled into herself, her jacket wrapped tightly around her. When he opened the door he was in a simple t-shirt and boxers, rubbing his eyes into focus, his hair a mess from being slept on. The look that crossed his face as he took her in, assured her that this was where she was supposed to be. Forgetting what had happened between them in the recent times, it was here she belonged, here she felt safe, her she wasn't afraid.

Without a word, Logan stepped back and gestured her inside. Veronica slowly made her way into the suite and headed toward Logan's room. Veronica pulled back the blankets on the other side of the bed as Logan climbed into his side. She slid in beside him and curled into the warmth of the bed. She had expected Logan to just sleep beside her, which was all she could have asked for. So, she was surprised when his arm went around her waist and pulled her close to him.

Veronica sighed and relaxed into him. It was then that she realized just why she had came here. It was there in his arms that she could sleep peacefully. He was the only one who could keep the demons at bay.
