"Promise me," he asked. No pleading, no raising of his voice, just a simple request.
"Will you trust my word?" Curiosity and astonishment laced his voice.
"If you promise and intend to keep it, yes," he confirmed. "But you have to give me your word."
He stared at his opponent with a mixture of surprise and mirth.
"To be or not to be, that is the question." The silent staring contest was disrupted by a new voice.
"Shakespeare again, Moz?"
"You're both behaving very Shakespearean now. What's at stake?"
"Trust." They answered simultaneously.
"The key is to get to know people and trust them to be who they are. Instead, we trust people to be who we want them to be - and when they're not, we cry."
"Mozzie, I trust him to make a right choice..." The deep voice was resigned.
"So you would believe me if I promise not to go anywhere near this warehouse in the next two days, and allow you to wrap up the case by yourself?"
"Yes."
"Okay, then you have my word." He maintained eye contact with his keeper, showing only honesty in his eyes, no lies, no deception.
The door closed with a soft click. He shook his head and gazed upon his friend drinking one of his wines, again.
"So, do I go there tomorrow or today and keep an eye on the Suits?"
"Tomorrow."
He did promise and intended to keep it. His ankle was still swollen and painful; spending the next two days at home was a good idea. He also hadn't mentioned anything about sending Mozzie.
A genuine promise was a promise even from a con man.
