Fan Fiction: Command and Conquer

The Veteran

He stood on the cliff overlooking the battlefield, as he did the GDI and NOD forces finally came together in an epic battle. Beams of light stabbed out across the barren and desolate plain, dessert really. The whole world was this way, but he could remember, he remembered the lush grasslands, dense forests, and towering, well up kept cities. Now there was nothing, the plains became dessert, forests became tiberium fields, and cities were destroyed by endless war. But he was old enough to know of the time before, twenty years ago his village was destroyed. Twenty long years since NOD troops had marched into his village and demanded conscripts for their cause, the village people had, of course protested. Then NOD massacred them, declaring them enemies of the "state", burned down the village, and blamed it on GDI. Only he and a few others escaped. Since then they had fought for GDI, for the innocent people killed. Now he was the only one left. Each time one of the few survivors had been killed it had pained him to his very soul. The last one had died five years ago, protecting another village from that same fate.

He looked at his troops, good men all, but too young, too young by far to know why they were fighting, for the cause of the first truly world spanning war. He was forty now, almost too old to fight, his bones ached, he grew tired easily, the constant strain of endless battle, endless stress had wearied him. But always he thought, one more battle, just one more. He knew that he would fight until he died, if they reassigned him to a desk, he would go AWOL and fight on his own, and had told the higher ups this several times. That was why he was the oldest person on active duty, that was why the let him fight. Turning up he saw lighting hit the ground as an ion storm, no more rain, just lighting now. Another thing those NOD would pay for. Sighing he turned to his troops, "Alright, we go around and hit 'em from the flank. That should get those NOD punks attention. Victory or death!" For him it was always victory, a curse and a blessing. Turning he marched into another fight.
