Neville stood over the rubble on what used to be the front lawn of Hogwarts. They dead, dying, injured, and relatively unscathed had all been moved from the lawn, and clean up efforts were under way. The sun was setting, but Neville just couldn't bring himself to go inside. He felt like he needed to be busy. He hadn't been a huge part of things up until beheading Voldemort's snake, Nagini, and he really didn't want the attention that he knew would be poured onto him as soon as he stepped into the castle. He didn't feel like what he had done was anything special, really. Anyone could have done it, he told himself.

A small noise interrupted his thoughts, and he turned to see Luna Lovegood clambering gracefully over a pile of fallen stones from the castle walls. She smiled her dazzling, far-off smile at him and came to stand by his side. They stood in silence for awhile, neither of them needing to speak, but just grateful for the other's company. After a while, Luna wandered over to a mostly flat, level bit of rubble and sat, patting the space beside her in invitation. Neville joined her, and she reached for his hand, taking it firmly in between her two small, delicate hands. They surveyed the landscape for a little while longer until Luna spoke.

"We did it, you know. It's all done." She looked up at him, her expression sure and peaceful.

Neville sighed, letting out some tension from his shoulders that he hadn't known he had been holding. "It is, isn't it?" He looked down at their intertwined fingers. "What now, Luna?"

She tilted her head. "Well, I suppose we pick up the pieces and use them to forge new beginnings," was her airy response.

His eye met hers, and he asked her softly, "Do we have a new beginning?"

Her face broke out in a widespread, angelic smile. "Every day, Neville, we will have a new beginning together. You and I, for as long as you will have me."

He smiled down at her. For the first time, Neville and Luna felt like they had found their places in the world. Together.
