Friday afternoon found Leonard McCoy working on a research paper in one of the various libraries on campus. (Heaven forbid he wanted to work in his own room but he couldn't risk his roommate distracting him. So library it was.)

Unfortunately, said roommate knew him well enough by now to realize where he would go, and speak of the devil. Jim Kirk plopped down suddenly in the chair next to McCoy almost causing the doctor to throw his book across the room.

"What's up Bones?" Kirk asked, grinning widely.

"Dammit Jim, I'm trying to finish this, go away" the doctor hissed back.

"But I'm bored and you promised to go drinking with me. That papers not due until Monday" Jim whined.

Bones sighed, "yes but if I go drinking with you chances are we will both be too drunk and/or hung over to finish it later"

"Wait, so you'll still go with me?" Jim asked, surprised at how easy it was to get Bones to agree.

"I promised, didn't I?" Bones grumbled halfheartedly, though he gave a small smile at the excitement on the younger man's face. (He never could resist the damn puppy dog face no matter how tired he was). "Just let me finish, I only need another page or so. And go sit somewhere else, I can't work with you breathing down my neck" he continued.

"Sure, Bones." Jim beamed, standing up "I'll be over there I suppose", he waved vaguely at the long rows of books, "come find me when you're done".

Bones nodded as Jim practically bounced off, grateful for the peace and quiet. He turned back to his paper and was soon lost in it again. Inspiration decided to desert him though and it took longer than expected to finish. When he finally leaned back and looked at the clock, it had been almost two hours.

"Shit, Jim's probably destroyed half the library by now" Bones thought to himself, feeling bad for making the kid wait so long. He gathered up his work, slung his bag over his shoulder, and went to go find his wayward friend.

"He's probably not even in here anymore" McCoy frowned, passing the first stacks. He searched most of the tall rows quickly, heading to the back of the room where he knew there were a few couches.

Upon rounding the last corner, the doctor halted at the scene in front of him, stunned. Apparently, the usually hyperactive Jim had fallen asleep laid out on one of the couches. His feet dangled off the edge and a book was on his chest, rising and falling with each even breath. Chuckling, McCoy approached the couch and took the book from Jim's limp hand and. He glanced back down as Jim sighed and curled up a bit, opening up the other end of the couch. Bones smiled at what seemed like a perfect invitation and sat down carefully so as not to bump Jim's head.

"Kid must've been as tired as me, as soon as he stopped moving, he crashed. Guess going out's gonna have to wait" Bones murmured, not at all disappointed by this turn of events.

Bones turned to the front of the book he still held and began reading, carding a hand through Jim's hair as he did. Jim smiled in his sleep and pressed closer to Bones' warmth, his head ending up in the doctor's lap and that was just fine with Bones.
