Gabriel leans against the concrete railing, ignoring the cold as it whips around him. The street below is packed with people, music lifts up to him along with the shouts of joy. He watches, not wanting to see but unable to look away.
The year hasn't been one to celebrate. At least not for him.
He learned that losing hope was worse than never having it. That people lie and cheat, that monsters don't just hide in closets. It is with jaded eyes he looks down on the celebration.
A throat clears behind him but he doesn't turn. He knew who it was long before the man announced himself.
"Look at them down there…as if next year is really going to be better than the last," Gabriel laments. The other man comes to lean on the wall beside him, mirroring his posture. There are a lot of things about him that mirrors Gabriel.
"You're better than you were last year."
Gabriel glances at him, "You're naïve Peter," he says, but there is no heat in it. The younger shrugs, his eyes locked on the ground below.
"Maybe," he replies, "But I'm not spending New Years Eve hating the 'Whos'." Gabriel laughs, a real laugh that few ever get to hear. They both look up as the large screen starts counting down. The voices lift up in unison.

"7…6." Gabriel looks up as his brother's voice is added to the mix. "5…4…3..2…1" The crowd below shouts loud enough to be deafening from where they stand, but Peter falls quiet. His eyes looking distant.
A piece of confetti catches on the wind and drifts by feet below. Compelled, Gabriel reaches out his power and pulls it up to them landing it in Peter's hand. The younger looks at the paper and smiles.
"Happy New Year Gabriel," Peter says, handing the paper back to him.
May this year find you in a better place than last, may it make you a better person.
Gabriel returns the smile than, realizing one thing the past year did bring him. "Happy New Year…brother."
