Karlie's Birthday
"I can not believe Karlie is already a year old." Jackie said in disbelief as she hung up a banner that said Happy First Birthday.
"I know, it's unreal." Nick agreed.
Karlie's birthday happened to land on a Saturday so Nick and Jackie were having a barbecue to celebrate. Jackie thought it was neat that they got to have her party on her actual birthday.
Only close family and friends were coming but it still promised to be fun. Nick's parents even flew in from Texas to join in on the fun.
An hour later people started arriving.
Nick barbecued burgers and hot dogs while Jackie ran around like a chicken with her head cut off trying to get everything else out on the table.
The kids were busy blowing bubbles from the huge bubble kit Jackie had just bought them and they were having a blast.
Karlie sat in Nick's mom's (Jill) lap fussing like crazy because she had a birthday hat on and she wanted it off right now.
"No, no sweetheart, you are the birthday girl, you have to wear it." Jill said, trying to soothe the infant.
Karlie let out a wail in protest.
"You have to keep it on at least until we get some pictures of you, you look so adorable." Jill said but Karlie wouldn't hear of it and cried harder.
"Alright, I'll take it off." Jill said with a sigh as she removed the hat.
The second the hat was off Karlie grinned broadly.
"You are a stinker." Jill told the baby with a laugh.
After everyone had eaten it was time for cake and ice cream.
Jackie set the cake in front of the baby so she could take some pictures. Jackie turned her back for a split second to grab her camera.
"Jackie." Her mom hollered.
Jackie spun back around but it was too late, Karlie had stuck her entire hand in the cake. The baby let out a squeal of delight as she pulled her hand out of the frosting. She promptly stuck her hand in her mouth so she could eat the frosting off of her hands.
"Well I guess that's the piece she wants." Jackie said with a laugh.
After Karlie had finished her cake she had it all over, it was all over her face, her hair, her high chair, her clothes, she was a complete mess, but after Jackie had wiped down her face and hands and changed her outfit she was ready to rejoin the party.
It was then time for Karlie to open her presents.
"Me help Kari." Jasmine said with a smile as she ripped open Karlie's first present.
Karlie let out an excited squeal when she saw the new stuffed animal that was in the wrapped package.
With the next present Johnna wanted to help too but Jasmine wasn't too thrilled about that.
"No Donna, me do." Jasmine argued.
"You both can help her." Jackie told Jasmine.
After that Jasmine grabbed one side of the present and Johnna grabbed the other.
"Good job girls." Jackie praised, happy that they had quit fighting.
Karlie was very spoiled, she got so many presents that Jackie didn't know where they would put everything.
After that the party started winding down and people started leaving.
The birthday girl promptly fell asleep, all the fun had totally wiped her out.
The older kids though didn't tire so easily, the continued to play with their new bubble kit well into the evening, it wasn't until darkness started to fall that Jackie managed to talk them in to going inside for the night.
As Nick and Jackie crawled into bed that night they realized that Karlie wasn't the only one that was exhausted.
"I'm so tired, I can hardly keep my eyes open." Nick told Jackie as he lay down.
"Me too, but I had a ton of fun today." Jackie told him.
"Yeah, that was fun, and boy did Karlie like her cake." Nick agreed with a chuckle.
"Well it was chocolate, what girl wouldn't like it?" Jackie asked with a laugh.
Nick laughed.
"Goodnight Nicky." Jackie told him.
"Night hon." Nick answered with a smile as he wrapped his arm around her.
Before long both of them were in dreamland.
The End!
