Halloween

In first year, Lily was awed by Halloween at Hogwarts.

Fresh from the muggle world, she admired the floating pumpkins and piles of confectionery on the house tables. She rolled her eyes at the Marauders' Halloween antics (namely, enchanting the Slytherins' sweets so they were impossible to unwrap), and met up with Severus after the feast to complain about them.

On October 31st in her third year, Lily went to Hogsmeade for the first time. She took the trip with her friends Marlene and Alice; none of them too interested in members of the opposite sex at the age of thirteen.
Lily fell in love with Hogsmeade; the quaint shops and enchanted products - the town simultaneously reminiscent of the village she'd grown up in, and completely and utterly different.
She tried her first Butterbeer that day, and didn't notice James Potter and Sirius Black sipping from their own tankards in the booth across from them. Unknown to Lily Evans - James, Sirius, Remus and Peter had been sneaking into the town since their first month at school. The Marauders' Halloween Surprise - as they'd dubbed it - was aided by carefully considered Zonko's Products that night.

On the Halloween of their fifth year, James asked Lily out for the first time. She'd presumed it was a joke at first, and her face went a bright, fiery red. When James had laughed that her face matched her hair now, and repeated his request with a smirk and a hand run through his hair. Lily had glared and informed him pointedly that she was going to Hogsmeade with Sev. James had sighed, and asked how she could handle the smell.
Lily thrown half a dozen insults at him and walked away, but she wasn't given the satisfaction of having the last word, as James called after her, saying, "Maybe next time then, Evans."

During the Halloween Hogsmeade trip of their final year, Lily agreed to go with James Potter. She wouldn't have believed it two years ago, but James had matured considerably, and their old arguments now settled into easy banter. They just seemed tofit, somehow. James would make a comment, and Lily's wit was sharp enough to rebuke it with lightning speed. He was overly protective and sweet in equal measures - throwing his arm round her shoulders as they passed hollering Slytherins in the street. The Pureblood ideology was ever powerful in the outside world, and both Head Boy and Girl were aware that it was beginning to infiltrate the walls of Hogwarts - the one place they thought they'd always be safe.

On October 31st, 1981, Lily and James Potter were found dead in their shattered home.
Sirius Black was accused of their murder, and sent to Azkaban, after a confrontation with the true murderer.
Peter Pettigrew ran free on his spindly rat legs - bleeding from one foot.
Remus Lupin was left friendless.

Harry Potter was sent off to live with the Dursleys, unaware that he would never again play with his father's wand or hear his mother's laugh.

And all around the country, owls carried the news of Harry Potter's strange fate; celebrations were held, jubilation among magickind.

But James and Lily Potter would never see another Halloween.
