Aaron woke up after falling asleep, reading one of Emily's favourite books.
"You came back." Aaron said.
"You seriously still think I wont." Emily said as she walked in, looking as beautiful as ever.
"I'm never sure." Aaron said as she sat across from him at the kitchen table.
"You've been up all night I presume, but fell asleep reading my book?" She asked.
"It's not the first time." Aaron replied.
"That doesn't mean its good for you." Emily sighed.
"Are you hungry?" He asked.
"Always." She replied.
"Hang on, I'll put the kettle on and make you some toast." Aaron said.
"I'm too tired to eat, Aaron." She said.
"Okay." He conceded, sinking back down into his seat.
Soft music had been playing quietly throughout the room and was suddenly obvious as the tension receded from the air around the two. It was a gentle sort of melody, with careful, salm strings over a tiny piano.
"Well, I'm hungry." Aaron said.
"You don't eat enough. I've always said." Emily said as he stood up and walked over to the cupboard, putting 2 slices of bread in the toaster, and making two cups of tea. The tiles under his bare feet were cold, but he didn't mind. He finished making toast and brought the cups of tea and slices of bread over.
"Why do you always do that? Make me one anyway?" Emily asked.
"Habit." Aaron replied, sliding the cup and plate over to her.
"You know it makes no sense though." Emily said.
"Meh." Aaron just replied.
"Thank you." She said. The next song that came on was slow, it was nice. It was a song to dance to.
"I miss having you here." Aaron said.
"I miss being here." Emily replied. "This song. Mom and Dad used to love this song. Rebecca, Vivienne and I caught them dancing to it once, in the living room. We were like, thirteen and fourteen and seventeen?" A moment later she said, "Dance with me." As she stood up, she took Aaron's hand, and pulled him out of his seat. He pushed the table and chairs to the side, and wrapped his arms around her waist. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and leaned into his shoulder.
"I love you. Never forgot that." Emily said.
"I love you too. I never will, I promise." Aaron replied. They danced for what felt like hours, until Emily left again, and Aaron went back over to finish his tea, and read some more, falling asleep like that again.
"Did he fall asleep in the kitchen again?" Hannah asked.
"Two cups and two plates again, too." Damien replied with a nod. "That's three nights this week."
"Kirkman did warn us." Hannah said, her eyes glistening as Damien tucked her under his arm.
"It is that time of the year." Damien agreed. "He's brought out her old books."
"Come on," Hannah said, patting her boyfriends back. "We'd best get him to a bed. Poor soul hasnt had proper sleep since the night of the anniversary.
"We should take him on a trip. Connecticut maybe, to see Viv. Or New York to see Becca." Damien grumbled. "Least he'd have gotten to see them."
"Damien," Hannah chastised quietly. "Our best friend's wife, who was also our best friend, died as well as his unborn child. Viv and Becca are mourning their sister as well. The three of them don't need to mourn together."
