Reminiscence

His legs ache with stiffness, the fire in his blood dulled to a gentle warmth.

Tired, he lay on the carpet, eyes drooping as he fell victim to sleep in the afternoon sun.

His son broke into mind, a bundle of energy, the same coat he himself had worn in his youth.

They used to race together, always letting the youth win. No longer necessary he could barely keep up now.

His daughters, as beautiful as their mother and more precious to him than anything else in the world.

He was always defensive when he met their suitors, no one was worthy of them. Now they had moved on, and had others to defend them.

His youth was not always fun, running from officers, lying and stealing from the families kind enough to take him in, he regretted it.

Then he met her.

She was everything he was not, a high class beauty, part of a kennel club, with beautiful brown eyes. He fell in love instantly.

And he was still in love.

They now lacked the speed and agility they once took for granted, but they had each other.

She pressed against his side, rousing him from his gentle sleep.

His eyes fell on her lying next to him, and with a sigh of contentment he lowered his head, and returned to sleep, the memories in his head yearning to be played out as dreams once more.
