Norway momentarily glanced up from a book he was reading and noticed that Denmark looked a little…odd. The Dane's eyes were glassy, his skin gray, and he seemed rather unfocused. "Den…you alright?" No answer. "Denmark." His partner snapped up, momentarily bringing light to his eyes, but they dimmed immediately.
"Huh? Wh-what, is something wrong," he breathed detachedly.
"Denmark…you look like hell. What's happened?" Denmark pressed his face into his hands.
"Ah, a lot actually. Financial crises, this civil war. People are dyin' left an–" His words were cut off by a painful hacking cough, and he crumpled to the floor, spattering his hands and the floor with tiny drops of blood. "Ah, lort. S-sorry…"
"DENMARK!" Norway launched himself up and ran over to prop up his partner, who was still coughing up a storm. The Norwegian's eyes flashed with shock as he stared at his bloodstained lips and sickly skin. "Crap…we need to get you to a hospital."
"N-no, that won't help anything," Denmark wheezed. "Y'know, Nor…I think this might be it."
"Don't say that, dammit!" Norway spoke in voice similar to a growl, but it was choked and teary. "Th-there's got to be some way I can help–"
"Norway." Norway looked down at Denmark, his wide eyes beginning to cloud with tears. "Don't worry okay?" Denmark smiled weakly, clasping his hand around Norway's. Norway slowly curled his fingers down as the tears bubbled and finally spilled over onto his cheeks. "Look around." Lifting his red eyes, Norway noticed tiny bits of light floating around the air. "I've already started dissolving. There's really not much we can do about that. But, there are a few things I'd like you to do for me, if it's okay." Norway nodded vigorously; his throat was blocking all the words and he was unable to speak. "Remember me. Remember that I existed. Please go out and live your life, but… don't forget me, okay?"
"O-okay. What else?"
"What's that little song that you liked? Autumn Leaves?" A slow nod.
"It really is nice, can you sing it with me?" Rubbing his eyes and attempting to gain some composure, Norway began to sing softly.
Do you ever wonder if the stars shine down for you?
Float down
Like autumn leaves
Hush now
Close your eyes before the sleep
And you're miles away
And yesterday–
Norway stopped singing for a moment and looked at the bits of light. There were many more of them now. Denmark was barely even holding Norway's hand anymore.
"Farvel…Norge…" Only a few of the little lights remained, and Norway's arms were empty. Fighting the block in his chest, Norway forced out the last lyric:
You were here with me…
