chapter one

Percy was eating lunch. He dug into his blue pancakes, watching his mom pull out a tray of blue cookies.

"Not until tomorrow." Sally said sternly, feeling her sons stare.

"But Mom-" Percy protested.

"Sorry, Percy. Besides, you're late for school. It's your first day! I can't believe how much you grew-look at you! already in fourth grade!" Sally said, smiling proudly at her son.

Percy couldn't help but smile back.

Sally handed him his backpack.

"Now get going." she told him, cleaning the plates off the table.

She waited for a respond. Nothing came.

"Percy?" Sally said, slightly alarmed.

Percy was staring at a Man who had somehow Magically appeared out of thin air. His face was smooth and pale, making his blood red lips more noticeable. His Golden eyes seemed to glow in the night. Even though he looked like a human, the air that hung around him screamed otherwise.

"Ah. I see." Sally said quietly.

"Mom?" Percy choked out.

"Do you know this guy?"

Sally sighed.

"Yes, Percy. This is Chaos-the God-and he's going to have a little chat with you, okay?"

Percy wasn't sure what to think.

"You're Chaos. A God?" he asked. Again.

"I'm not buying it. Mom?"

Sally was talking on the phone, probably talking to his teacher. Explaining why he was late on the first-day of...school? Well, not really. The first day of Richa Elementary sounded right to him.

What. Sally mouthed.

"Who is this guy, really?" he asked.

The 'guy' sighed.

"I assure you, Percy. I am Chaos. Though, to put it exactly, I am not a God. I am more powerful, more ancient. I am the universe itself. I believe you know this." he said.

Know this? What was he talking about?

Percy looked at his mom. She nodded.

"So you're saying that the Gods-everything, is real?" Percy asked. Again.

He nodded. Again.

"I know this is something that goes against your 10 short years of life. But put it this way. Do you have another explanation on how I suddenly appeared in front of you? This cannot be achieved with-what do humans call it-with simple magic tricks. Your mom, who has rarely lies to you, tells you that I am Chaos. I do not have a reason to lie to you. You do not have a reason not to believe me." he said, in a calm smooth voice.

Percy was never a golden star student. More like the black star student. Or something like that. But still, when he put it that way, the only problem of believing him was his life. It went against everything he learned. And from what he experienced. This couldn't be real. He glanced at his mom. She nodded at him. Okay, Percy. Time to throw my life experience out of the window. How easy is that?

"Okay. So why is a-a God sitting in my living room?" he asked, still a bit suspicious.

Chaos smiled.

"Finally. I'm here to offer you a job."

Percy was pretty sure he was too young.

Chaos laughed at his confusion.

"Percy, when I first created the universe, I didn't just make one. I made dozens."

Percy wasn't sure what to make out of that. Didn't 'universe' meen...well, everything? How could there be dozens of...everything? Percy decided to spot thinking. Whatever the God says, right?

"O-kay. So?"

"Percy, I can't really keep track of all of them. My...sister. Or Order, as you humans would call her. Keeps me from it. So, I need one person in each universe to keep track of it for me."

Percy pointed at himself.

"Me?"

Chaos nodded.

"But I'm just a human." Percy said, puzzled.

"I can barely keep track of my homework."

Chaos nodded.

"I am aware of that. However, if you accept my offer, then, as my 'Balancer' you will be able to not only keep track of...your universe but influence it."

Percy decided that his brain was too small.

"But why a Balancer?"

"Because Percy." Chaos explained.

"I need you to make sure that someone doesn't 'take over the world' because that would be...quite bad. I like the way how things are running right now you know. Therefore, I am asking you to 'balance' the good and evil."

Percy stared.

Chaos chuckled.

"The name wasn't my idea." he promised.

"So, do you accept?"

Percy was sure that this was not his idea of a 'good job'. He preferred something safer. Something that didn't involve 'saving the world'.

Chaos noticed his hesitation.

"Percy, my Balancers rarely die. The only power of source that rivals them is Orders people. Or myself, or Order naturally. And, to get into a fight would mean a fight between me and Order. Of course, there are some exceptions. But-" he shrugged.

"They happen once in a thousand years. You will have to be really unlucky to get involved in it."

Percy frowned. He was really unlucky.

"You can protect your family, Percy."

Chaos said quietly.

That hit a spot. Was it possible that he could get rid of his stepfather?

Percy turned toward his mom.

"Percy." Sally said, carefully.

"I don't want you to do this for me. But this can help you survive in the future."

Percy blinked.

"Survive? From what?"

Chaos raised an eyebrow.

"You didn't tell him?"

Sally shook her head.

"The more they know, the more they smell."

"Hey! I don't smell." Percy protested.

"And whats with me stinking the more that I know?"

Sally smiled sadly.

"You'll know when you're older."

Percy knew from experience that his mom would not spill the beans. Besides, even though he had a nagging suspicion that whatever this new secret was, was important, his brain told him that there was no more space for life-changing information.

"Percy." Chaos pressed.

Percy bit his lips. It seemed like his mom wanted him to accept his 'job'. There had to be a good reason. Besides, he could protect his family. And there was like, only 0.000000000000001% of him being killed. So what the hell?

"I'm in." he told Chaos.

Chaos clapped his hands.

"Excellent!"

His eyes seemed to glow. Percy felt something cold enter his bloodstreams. For a moment, his Raven hair darkened and his sea-green eyes flashed crimson Red. Though his features didn't change much, it was as if someone had taken them and erased all the flaws. They turned inhumanly, hauntingly beautiful. Then, he could feel something enter him and click. He felt different. More powerful, faster. The world around him sharpened. He felt his five senses sharpen, along with his sixth.

Chaos offered him a sword.

"This is 'Reaper'."

The blade was Black, gold running through the middle. He could hear it hum, vibrating. Slowly, he grasped the hilt. And almost doped it. The moment his hands curled around the hilt, it felt as if hundreds of invisible Ants were crawling up his arm. Thin, invisible, but hard armor surrounded him. He wasn't sure how he knew, but he just did.

"Each Balancer has one special 'gift'. Often, it reflects the personality of the user. Yours is space. You can bend space itself. Or 'rip' it. Though I must warn you. I do not recommend 'ripping' space. If you do not do it correctly, you may get lost."

Chaos said.

Okay. Fine. At least he wouldn't be late for school.

"This is your 'Balancer' form. Most times you will just look as you always did. All you need is a tug in your soul to change into this form."

Percy somehow understood. It came to him as naturally as breathing. You just know.

Chaos smiled.

"I believe we're done. Have a nice day Balancer, and I hope to see you soon."

Before Percy could say anything like 'thank you' or 'I think I changed my mind' space rippled and Chaos was gone.
