The Impala was a special car, even though John knew he would eventually give it to Dean when he reached driving age. She required loving care – John hoped to instill in both his sons as they grew up riding on her broad, vinyl seats.
Normally, he wouldn't have dared let his boys have food in the Impala. Life on the road, however, was different. They quickly learned that spilling equated death.
Especially when 'sugar and a cherry on top' took on a second meaning.
Sammy wasn't allowed to have ice cream in the car anymore. (He knew Dean shared anyway.)
