Written for QLFC Kenmare Kestrels. Round 7, position seeker, prompt-inspired by the movie The Green Lantern. (Le sigh) It's AU, which I once swore I would never do. This forum definitely has me stepping out of my comfort zone, but I'm loving it! Also HUGE thanks to Kat for being my beta, also just for everything in general :)

Disclaimer: I own not one gosh darn thing.

Draco stared at the package that was sitting on his desk. It had been delivered to his home the day before, and there was just something weird about it. It didn't say who had sent it and it had just appeared out of thin air. A small box with an envelope attached that elegantly bore his name on the front.

It was unnerving, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to open it. So he had brought it into work with him where the object of his affections, one Hermione Granger, could take a look at it.

But there was still something about it that he couldn't explain.

It was like the box was calling to him.

He could feel it in his very body, a gentle pull, a tingling sensation. It reminded him of the first time he had used his wand.

His thoughts are interrupted as Hermione knocks on his office door and lets herself in, "Hey, sorry I ran late with a meeting with the Minister. So where is this mysterious package of yours?"

Draco gestured to it and watched her inspect it with a quirked eyebrow. "Do you not feel it?"

She looked at him in confusion, "Feel what, Draco?"

"It's like it's pulling me to it. Do you not feel that?"

She shook her head and picked up the envelope, "No I don't feel anything like that. It doesn't seem to be cursed, have you looked at the letter yet?"

He shook his head no and she gestured to it, silently asking if she could open it up. He nodded and sat back in his chair, running a hand through his hair as she began to read the letter out loud.

"Dear Mr. Malfoy, it's my pleasure to inform you that you have been chosen.

I fear a threat much greater than Voldemort is on its way to Earth. The contents of this package have chosen you to defend Earth's humanity. I suggest you get to figuring out how to use your new powers. It's one thing to have magical blood and to be able to perform spells and charms, it's another to use the power of your body and mind to wield the powers contained within this box.

Signed, a keeper of the keys.

P.S. I'll be watching."

Hermione looked up and locked eyes with Draco as she fell into the chair opposite his across the desk. "What kind of practical joke are the boys playing on you now?"

Draco's eyes lit up, "You think that's what it is?"

She shook her head and laughed. "I mean, this is like something out of a bad comic book."

"A what book?"

Hermione rolled her eyes and stood, "Never mind, Draco. Open the box." She reached over to pick it up and hand it out to him.

Thinking now that it could very well just be Theo and Blaise playing tricks on him, he took it from her and slowly unwrapped the bow that tied it together. It had a clasp under the bow that allowed the box to open at the center, and inside sat a large emerald ring set in gold. It looked vintage, and entirely goblin made.

It also physically hurt him to not touch it.

Just as he was about to reach out and run a finger over the emerald, Hermione snatched it out of his hand and examined it. "Don't tell me you were planning to propose with this? It's gaudy and green? Really?"

He shook his head, all the haze disappearing as soon as it was out of his hands. He narrowed his eyes and raised an eyebrow at his girlfriend of almost five years and tsked at her. "You know I have better taste than that, love. And you are aren't supposed to know anything about when I plan to propose, just know that you're off limits to anyone else."

Coming around the desk to wrap her in his arms, he smiled at the teasing look she wore. He knew that even if he had proposed with a ring that gaudy she would have worn it proudly. But he really did have better tastes than that.

He gave her a quick peck, "Are you still planning on coming over tonight for dinner?"

She laughed as she turned to leave, "Would I miss Pinky's world famous Shepard's pie? What do you take me for?"

Once she was gone he turned and looked at the ring laying on his desk. Now that it was just him and the box again he started to feel the pull once more. He frowned and closed the box, turning to take it with him to Theo's office.

He was going to get to the bottom of this.

It called out to him, almost like it had a voice now. It hadn't been Theo or Blaise that had sent it to him. They thought it was funny, but swore it wasn't them. They also didn't feel the pull that he felt when they were examining it, just like Hermione hadn't.

Blaise had checked it for spells, charms, any type of magic he could think of and came up with nothing. To them it was just a normal ring.

He thought back to the letter that had been attached to it. It had read that the ring had chosen him to be the protector of the Earth, that a threat greater than Voldemort was coming. He briefly felt giddy at those words. He had always wanted to be "the chosen one."

He'd always envied Harry, because everyone liked him. He got all the glory and fame from the war. Draco had done his part too, he hadn't outed them to his Aunt. But those were thoughts he didn't want to bring up, after all he had Hermione and that was one thing Harry would never be able to take away from him.

But still, he had always wondered what it would be like. To be cheered and unconditionally adored by everyone.

But wasn't Hermione enough?

Enough.

Before he knew it the ring was on his finger.

At first, nothing happened, he thought that it really was just a joke and the guys had done a right job of convincing him it wasn't them. Then, seconds went by and all of a sudden he felt a powerful surge through his body.

Everything disappeared around him and he felt the dizzying feeling of apparition. Then he was looking into the face of purple skinned old man.

"I see you decided to accept your fate, young man!"

Draco looked around frantically, at this point wishing one the guys would pop out and yell, "Gotcha!"

"Are you ready to become the worlds first wizarding superhero?" The old man turned and motioned for Draco to follow.

Draco shook his head in confusion, "What the bloody hell is a super hero?!"

Ah, had to go go go super fast. This was just weird.
