out of state, out of mind
disclaimed.
Cammie stands alone in the street lamp light in a suburb thousands of miles away from home. She waits for the late bus to pick her up and take her no-one-knows-where. On her person, she holds everything she would ever need: money, identification, firearm. In her head, her cover on which her life depends. Her heart misses what she wants: someone to hold her.
Leaving Gallagher Academy, in the early morning hours, was not easy. Physically and emotionally. The security had been upgraded tenfold since the beginning of the year, but it was doable after studying the schematics all week. Bex, Liz, and Macey were fast asleep; it was effortless to sneak out of their suite, but it took a lot to leave. Her mother was probably slumbering and if she wasn't, Cammie was lucky to have left the school at all.
And Zach; Cammie was sure she glimpsed a curtain flutter as she tiptoed down the staircase. She didn't dare turn around or utter a whisper. There was nothing she could do or say. He couldn't stop her, she knew he knew that. He also knew he had better not follow her.
There's an air of opportunity in the night around her. Her whole life, Cam has been watched over. By her parents, her grandparents, the CIA, FBI, a threatening association of assassins, her friends, townspeople, teachers. Never has she been actually on her own, with no one but herself to rely on. While she is hiding for her life, Cammie is excited. Adrenaline runs thick in her veins. With that opportunity comes the risk, she realizes this. She realized it a long time ago. It's her against everyone else.
A chill passes through her and she pulls her jacket close. At the moment, she is at ease. Out of state, out of mind. Instinct. Natural. Careful. Five states she has been through, zigzagging, backtracking, advancing. She is acutely aware of what she's doing, what she's pulling. Her entire spy training has lead up to this and she can't afford any mistakes.
Cammie stands alone in the street lamp light. An old, filthy bus pulls up beside her. The license plate is memorized in a matter of seconds. There are three other persons on board, four including the driver. The door slides open, the doors close as she slips the coins in the slot. Just another bus ride.
