There are certain things in life that one can never truly prepare for. No matter how hard you try to plan for them, they'll always blind sight you. You'll never see it coming, no matter how hard you squint into the darkness.
No amount of plotting and scheming could save your soul. Fighting it would be futile...and yet, there was always those who refused to give in. Whose back bone was much too sturdy for their own good.
Perhaps, that's how the Legends and their children found themselves in this particular predicament...
There were too many surprises that night. Too many unwelcome faces. Too much to lose. And so everything simply...fell apart...
~ Liv: Seattle Police Station ~
Liv sat in the center of the precinct, examining her finger nails. Presently, she was on preppy school girl brain, and so she had gotten a little full of herself. (Along with the desperate urge to run away to the nearest shopping mall. She'd kill for a pair of stilettos right now...)
See, Liv was what one might call...a zombie. She had been for several years now. In fact, the zombie population in Seattle had exponentially grown over the last twenty-five years. Nearly everyone was a zombie in this city, most of them starving due to lack of fresh brains coming in. (But that always seemed to be a problem. They couldn't just walk up to a living human and eat their brains. Not unless they wanted to break the law anyway.)
Liv sighed, stretching out on her seat. She was so bored. Honestly, what did it take to get a little excitement around here? A dead body? A crime? Humans to smuggle across the wall? Of course if she decided to participate in any of those activities she'd risk breaking a nail, which was something she was not willing to risk at the moment.
Clive walked in just then, carrying his jacket in one hand and his car keys in the other. "Liv," he said, getting the zombies attention. "We gotta go. Boss called in. Said something fishy was going on down town."
Liv gave him a look. She could really use the excitement, but honestly having a little entertainment was not worth ruining this gorgeous manicure. "I can't go," Liv pouted. "My nails."
Clive rolled his eyes. "You don't have to touch anything. Just look around and see if you get any visions." He walked over and hulled her to her feet. "It might be related to our murder."
"Ugh," Liv groaned, as the cop dragged her out of the police station. "Fine."
~ Legends Legend Kids ~
Sara landed the Waverider in an abandoned parking lot of down town Seattle. She ordered Gideon to cloak the ship, as the two teams exited.
She looked around the city outside. Everything seemed unnaturally calm. The people didn't seem the least bit concerned about an evil organization trying to take over the world. (The Legion of Doom had kind of been reborn. Long story.) There also seemed to be some kind of hippie fashion statement going on, because a majority of the pedestrians had white washed hair and ghostly pale skin. Even stranger, there was a giant granite wall, tall enough that -- even when one cranked their neck all the way back -- they still couldn't see the top of the structure.
Sara frowned. She remembered, about two decades back, hearing about some kind of wall being built in Seattle. But she was always busy with protecting the time line and saving the world, so she never got any of the details.
"Keep your eyes open," she told her team. "Kids, stick with your parents. Something about this town is...odd."
Laurel snapped her fingers and pointed at her mother. Speaking to her own team, she said, "What she said!"
"Brilliant idea Laurel," JJ rolled her eyes. "Excellent leadership skills."
"Thank you," the blonde girl bowed.
"I was being sarcastic," JJ told her.
"Uh...I don't have any parents here," Catriona pointed out, before the other two girls could begin squabbling.
"Neither do I," Samantha added.
Samantha was the daughter of Jonathan Crane -- aka the Scarecrow. Technically, he was one of their enemies, and the team should have been weary of her, but they had learned long ago not to judge a person based on their heritage.
Catriona was a Stein. Her family was back in Central City. She'd snuck off, along with the rest of the Legend Kids, to steal the Waverider a few weeks ago.
Since neither of the eight teenagers would listen, and since they insisted on throwing themselves in deadly situations, the Legends had no choice but to chaperon them as they went along. (Not to mention, they had to find Catwoman, get back their stolen property, and find their former captain Rip Hunter on top of all that.) It was a very stressful time for the Legends, indeed.
"Right," Sara nodded slowly. She thought for a moment. "Catriona, you go with Ethan and Mick. Samantha, you go with Jax and JJ."
Without waiting to see if there were any objections, the White Canary turned back to the road. "Stay on the coms," she told everyone. "If there's any trouble, call for back up." Then, everyone split up.
~ Halls Zari ~
Zari had gone with the Hall family, assuming they were the least likely to chew her out. It was her fault Catwoman escaped with the Vortex Manipulator. (Well hers and Jax's.)
The crazy cat lady had tricked the two engineers, knocking them over before running off the time ship. (At the time the Waverider had been badly damaged, and they had only just finished repairs. Jax and Zari had been the only ones on the ship at the time.) Since leaving the old west a lot of drama had started. Mick had accidentally burned Laurel (she was all healed, now, thanks to Gideon ), the Legends had been on edge and arguing, and Sara was just looking for a reason to hit someone.
Zari figured the victim would be less likely to be her if she stayed as far away from the captain as possible. (And also Jax, in case Sara deemed them untrustworthy together now...platonically of course.)
Ryan walked a head of the adults, peaking inside the store windows and muttering, "Could be gayer..."
"So, I guess you're the woman that hawk mask belongs to," Zari nodded at Kendra. She was referring to this old hawk shaped mask, similar to the one Kendra had worn in their battle on Earth Two, that she had found a few decades ago in the Waverider's storage unit.
Kendra seemed confused for a moment, but then a look of understanding passed over her face. "Oh, yeah," she nodded. "I left a few spare helmets on the ship in case we ever met back up with the Legends."
Zari nodded in understanding. She knew how unpredictable the Legends were. One minute your living your normal life, the next your living in a scifi novel.
"After defeating Savage Kendra and I never saw them again," Carter added. "Not until now anyway."
Zari snorted. "Okay," she said. "Seriously...Savage? That sounds like a bad name of a comic book character."
"Actually, his name is Hath-set," Kendra explained. "But being immortal, he changed his name every few centuries, like we did."
"And he thought Savage was a good a name?" Zari said skeptically.
"His first name was Vandal," Carter told her.
"Vandal Savage," Zari mused. "That's...That's a really bad name..."
"At least you can pronounce it," Kendra shrugged. "Unlike that time demon you told us about."
"Yeah," Carter nodded in agreement. "What was it? Mal-usk? Mull-us? Mall-ass?"
"It's pronounced Mal-is."
The voice drew the attention of the three adults, but it only really struck a nerve within Zari. The voice belonged to a woman that had made her life hell, the daughter of a psycho, magic wielding assassin. Nora Darhk.
She hadn't changed much in the last two decades. Her dark hair was cut a little shorter than Zari remembered; and her eyes were a tad softer, less serial killery than Zari was use to seeing. If it wasn't for that snarky attitude of hers, Zari would have been convinced Nora had reverted back to her old self. Before the demon had taken control of her. The woman was definitely more friendly, since the Legends had defeated Mallus, but some things were far too broken to be fixed.
Ryan, paying more attention to the stores than where he was going, walked right into Nora. "Oof," he grunted, stumbling back. He looked up. "Well hello, random lady," he said. "You came from out of no where...I'm gay."
"I...okay," Nora nodded. "Good for you."
"Thanks!" Ryan said.
Nora glanced around the streets at the random passerbyers. "Who's kid is this?"
"...He's our son," Carter spoke up. "Who are you?"
"Nora Darhk," Zari answered for her. "What are you doing here?"
"Zari Tomaz," Nora greeted. "You're still with the Legends?"
"Yeah?" Zari frowned. "So?"
Nora glanced around, as if she thought someone might be watching them. "We shouldn't talk here. Is the Waverider near by?"
"No," Zari lied.
"Then how did you get here?" Nora asked, not believing her.
"We...drove," Zari said.
"...Right," Nora rolled her eyed. "Well, when you see your captain, tell her we need to talk." Without another word, she raised her time stone and disappeared from sight. As soon as she was gone, a scream rang out throughout the street.
~ Mick, Ethan, Catriona ~
Catriona and Ethan fell behind Mick, walking side by side. Fitz trotted along next to Ethan as they went.
Mick walked ahead, probably lifting wallets as he passed by people.
Ethan shifted awkwardly. He waited until he was sure his dad couldn't hear. (Or at least until he wasn't paying them any attention.)
"So..." he started. "Uh...I heard something weird the other day..."
Catriona paused for a moment. Then, she nodded. "Yeah?" she said.
"Yeah," Ethan nodded. "Um, you...were saying some weird stuff in the medbay."
"Hm. I don't remember," Catriona said. Though, he could tell she was lying.
"Something about percentages and 'she's fighting me' or something," Ethan said, refusing to let it go.
"Oh. Yeah. That," Catriona laughed nervously. "That was...a nightmare."
"A nightmare?" Ethan repeated.
Catriona nodded. "Yup."
"So...you're not, like, possessed by a demon or something?" Ethan asked. "Because those things seem to like hanging around our group..."
Catriona rolled her eyes. "Please. Do I look dumb enough to get myself possessed by a demon?" She grabbed the necklace around her neck. "Besides, the Winchesters gave of these, remember? Unless we take them off, the demons can't even find us, let alone possess us."
The necklace was a leather band with a charm dangling from it - a Star of David surrounded by a sun. (An anti possession charm.) All of the Legends and Legend Kids had an identical one, given to them by the Winchester Cousins and John Constantine. Back when they were still in Central City and the Legend Kids were training with the Green Arrow, they'd learned that a group of demons were hunting the Snart Twins. Constantine and the Winchesters had tried to help them, but the best they could come up with so far were these necklaces.
"I guess you're right," Ethan shrugged. Though, something still felt...off.
She still looked the same for the most part. Her brown hair was still long and elegant. Her dazzling blue eyes still seemed to sparkle when the sunlight hit just right. She still had that skinny figure and smooth, pale skin; and her clothes were still as fashionable as ever. (Presently, she wore pink heeled boots, along with a sparkly shirt, jeans, and a bright pink jacket.)
But her behavior lately had been odd. Ethan had always thought the girl was kind of weird, anyway, so he'd just dismissed it before he'd heard her muttering those weird things in the medbay. Then, he realized her attitude was completely different.
Normally, she had some snarky comment. She radiated confidence and wasn't afraid to put anyone in their place. Especially Ethan. Now, she rarely said anything unless absolutely necessary. Despite the fact that she still had the same style, she hardly spent any time in the fabrication room anymore. It was her favorite room. Usually, she spent all her time in there. There was also the fact that she didn't work on any experiments in the cargo bay anymore. (Normally, she was found working on her invisible bracelet in there.) More than once, Ethan had even caught her stumbling over science words that she'd easily be able to read any other time.
She might have looked the same, but -- ever since the Legend Kids had left Torchwood -- it was as though Catriona was a completely different person.
They kept walking in silence for a few steps. Suddenly, Fitz began barking. Mick turned around to see what was up. The dog ran off.
The humans followed, pushing pedestrians out of their way in order to keep up. Fitz lead them down the block, turning down and alley. Here he came to a stop, his fur sticking up on end, his teeth snarling angrily.
It didn't take Ethan long to figure out why. At the end of the alleyway stood the woman they were looking for - Catwoman. Selina Kyle turned and smirked at them, giving them a small wave. Her wild, curly sandy blonde hair was pushed back by a pair of goggles. She wore a leather jacket, jeans, and boots.
"Took you long enough," she told them. The woman frowned at the dog. "And I see you brought...that thing..."
Mick whipped out his heat gun, aiming it at her head. "Where's the time courier?"
"I thought you said it was a Vortex Manipulator?" Catwoman frowned.
Mick shrugged. "Same thing."
"Whatever," Selina said. "I sold it."
Mick grunted, annoyed. He really hated other thieves. They were a pain in the ass.
"Got a bucket load of cash for it," Selina went on. "Lots of crooks around these parts. Gotta love Zombie Town."
"Zombie Town?" Ethan questioned, holding Fitz back.
"What?" Selina said. "You guys didn't know?"
"Zombies," Mick mused. "Already done that one."
"Yeah, well, this whole place is crawling with em," Selina said. "But don't worry. They only eat dead people's brains...except that zombie church. They eat living people too."
"That's...gross," Catriona commented. Ethan lost his grip on his dog, and Fitz charged Catwoman. Selina jumped up on the wall, pushing herself up and grabbing hold of the fire escape. She climbed up the stairs, disappearing onto the roof. Catwoman ran off, just as a scream rang throughout the streets.
~ Snarts ~
The Snarts walked through the city, looking for any suspicious characters. Mick had just called in over the coms saying Catwoman was around, and she had already sold their Vortex Manipulator. Now, they had to find it. And get it back. (Oh, and also the place was infested with the undead.)
Laurel and Kaleb ran ahead of their parents. They acted perfectly normal, but Sara could tell they were on edge. After all, being told your parents had inadvertently sold your soul to the devil wasn't exactly easy to take.
Sara sighed. She and Leonard had only ever wanted to keep them safe. They'd only made the deal with that demon in the first place, because they needed to heal their babies. But they had failed to complete the deal, and now their kids were in the worst kind of danger imaginable.
Leonard glanced over at his wife, giving her a slight nod of encouragement. As soon as this whole Legion of Doom mess was over, they'd find a way to save their kids! As long as it wasn't too late by then...
The twins had stopped walking, making their parents frown with worry. Leonard and Sara hurried forward.
Kaleb and Laurel were staring at a small girl, no more than five or six, curled up on the ground. Her hair was snow white, and her skin was pale as a ghost. Red and purple veins popped out from her face; her eyes were blood red. The girl was growling angrily, like a beast. She was rocking back and forth at a rapid rate.
"Um, you okay kid?" Laurel asked her. The girl snarled at her, letting out a terrifying hiss.
"I'm gonna take that as a no," Kaleb muttered.
Sara pushed her kids behind her. This girl was being controlled by something dangerous, something Sara herself had felt tugging at her soul time and time again. A hunger. A blood lust.
That was something Sara refused to let her kids go anywhere near. If this girl attacked, she needed to be sure she could protect them. Slowly, she reached in her pocket for one of her knives.
But before much of anything could happen, a man pushed through the Snarts. He was wearing a black helmet and body armor - bullet proof vest, combat boots, knee and elbow pads. A gun was strapped to his back.
"Excuse me," the man said, hurrying towards the girl. He knelt at her side. "Hey," he told her. "Hi."
The man waved his hand in front of the girl's face, making her look at him. She hissed.
"Hi," the man said again. "My name is Major Lilywhite. I'm here to help you, but I'm gonna need you to calm down okay?"
The girl didn't show any signs of calming down. She just kept twitching and snarling. The man, Major, reached into his pocket. At first, Sara thought maybe he was bringing out a knife, but instead he held out a tube, like one of those plastic tubes companies use to put yogurt in.
"Hungry?" Major asked the girl.
The girl eyed the tube, staring at it as though it was the most delicious thing she'd ever spotted. She reached out for it. Major let her take it. The girl slurped it greedily.
Immediately, the girl's features began to change. The veins sank back into her skin. Her eyes slowly faded from red, changing to a deep brown. The girl's hair was still white, and her skin was still pale, but now she looked at least somewhat normal.
She smiled up at Major. "Thank you." The girl got to her feet and ran off with the rest of the tube. Major stood and watched her go.
"Um, what was that?" Sara asked, removing her hand from her pocket cautiously. She wasn't sure just yet if this man was also a threat, but it seemed safe for now.
"Beast Mode," Major told her. He frowned. "I'm guessing you guys aren't from around here?"
"Now why would you guess a thing like that?" Leonard asked.
"For one thing, most people already know about Beast Mode," Major shrugged. "But you guys seemed completely surprised. Which means you must be new in town."
Sara shrugged dramatically. "Busted."
"Huh," Major grinned. "Well, welcome Seattle...Well, New Seattle. Zombie Town."
"Mick wasn't kidding, then," Leonard noted.
"Zombies, metas, demons, aliens," Laurel listed off. "Crazy world."
Major blinked. "Metas? Demons? Aliens?"
"Oh my," Kaleb added, forming a parody quote of the Wizard of Oz.
"I knew it!" Major cheered. "I was right! Woo!" He pumped his fist in the air. Leonard took a step back, pushing the kids back as he did so.
"Sorry," Major laughed sheepishly. "This brain I'm on. He was a conspiracy theorist." He said that like it was supposed to make perfect sense. It didn't clear anything up.
"Right," Major nodded. "I keep forgetting your new to this." He shifted his weight. "When a zombie eats a brain, we gain some personalities of the person the brain belonged to. This guy, for example was a conspiracy theorist, so I've been sprouting random theories all day."
Laurel squinted at him. "You're a zombie?"
Major nodded. "Most people here are."
Sara folded her arms over her chest. "I've delt with zombies before. They didn't seem quite so..." She trailed off, trying to think of a polite way to put it.
"Normal?" Major suggested.
"I was going to say friendly, but yeah," Sara nodded.
Major grinned, shrugging slightly. "As long as we get to eat, most of us are pretty civil." His eyes widened, like he realized he'd just said something wrong. "But don't worry! We don't eat the living! We only take the brains of the dead!"
"Like vultures," Leonard noted.
"Uh, kind of," Major admitted. Before their conversation could continue, a scream rang throughout the streets.
~Heywoods Amaya ~
The Heywoods and Amaya searched the streets for the Vortex Manipulator. There were no signs of it anywhere.
As they walked, Ben chattered excitedly. Nate hadn't seen them so excited in ages. They were so happy in that moment that their hair began to change color.
It was something that happened whenever they felt intense emotions. When they were angry, their hair was red; when they were scared their hair was yellow, etc. etc. Normally, however, their hair remained purple, as Ben was usually in a neutral mood. This was the first time Nate had seen their hair change in months.
Slowly, the short purple locks began changing, becoming a lighter shade - green. This was the color their hair turned when they were happy. Nate smiled lightly at this.
"What are you hoping for?" Ben asked rapidly. "Boy? Girl? Both? Neither? Thought about any names yet? How about something gender neutral? Just in case, you know?"
Amaya smiled, nodding slowly as she got lost in their rambles. Ben walked over to the window of one of the stores, mumbling something about getting pink and blue blankets when the baby was born.
Amaya laughed lightly. "He's really excited about the idea of getting a sibling, isn't he?"
"They," Nate corrected.
"They," Amaya nodded. "Sorry..."
Nate took her hand in his. "It's okay."
Amaya frowned suddenly. "What about...their mother?"
Nate's eyes widened. "Oh, no! She's not in the picture. We, uh, we're not together anymore."
"Oh," she said. "What happened?" She laughed nervously. "I guess we should have had this conversation before...you know." She nodded at her stomach.
"Well, you know the Legends moto," Nate said. "Sometimes we screw up for the better."
"So, what did happen?" Amaya pressed gently. "With you and Ben's mother?"
Nate shrugged. "She didn't approve of Ben's identity," he explained. "It caused some problems between us. She wanted to change them, make them one or the other - male or female. But that's not who they are. I couldn't live with myself if I went along with something like that."
"So, you broke up?" Amaya guessed.
"Yep," Nate nodded. "Divorce is a pain in the ass. Just...by the way."
Amaya laughed. "I don't think divorce is a common thing in the 1940s."
"Oh. That's inconvenient."
"I would think that divorce is more inconvenient, considering all the drama it causes," Amaya shrugged.
"That's true," Nate said, tilting his head to the side.
Ben ran back over. Their hair was orange now, the color of worry and insecurity. Nate had only ever seen it turn that color when their mother was around.
"There's some guy over there," Ben said, pointing across the street. "I think he's watching us."
Amaya and Nate followed their finger, searching for the guy they were talking about. It didn't take long to spot him. He was the only one on that side of the road.
The man wore a thick, blue parka, lose jeans, and sneakers. He had the hood pulled up so that it covered his facial features, but Nate would recognize that coat anywhere.
It belonged to Captain Cold -- aka Leonard Snart. Except, Leonard presently had his coat on his own body. So, that meant one of two things. One) Leonard had been jumped, and someone had stolen his jacket. Two) This was Leonard's Earth X doppelganger, Leo.
The first option was unlikely, as Leonard was with his wife, who was a highly trained assassin. Also, he was an expert thief. No one would be able to get past the two of them.
Which left option two. Leo Snart. But if it was Leo, then what the heck was he doing here? Was there trouble on Earth X? Had he come to help with the Legion of Doom? And how did he know they'd be in Seattle?
Nate started forward, ready to ask the inter-dimentional traveler all these questions and more. However, as soon as he got close, Leo started walking away.
"Leo! Hey! Wait up, man!" Nate called, running after him. Ben and Amaya followed after him.
Leo turned the corner, entering a big crowd. Nate looked around, spotting the hood of the parka a moment later. He ran after it.
People were walking in all directions, making it difficult to maneuver. Nate pushed past them, searching frantically for their friend. Where was he going? Why was he hiding from them?
The hood disappeared into the crowd, peaking out a moment later. Nate moved towards it, only for it to disappear again. He turned around, trying to spot it again. It was no where in sight. Leo was gone.
Nate frowned, as Ben and Amaya appeared next to him. "Where did he go?" Nate wondered.
"Are you sure it was him?" Amaya asked.
"It has to be," Nate said. "I don't know anyone else who wears a parka like that. And if it's not Leonard, it has to be Leo, right? Unless there's another version of him?"
"I'm confused," Ben said. "Who's Leo? Another version of who?"
"It's...complicated," Nate said. He frowned thoughtfully. "So, you know Kaleb and Laurel's dad? Leo is him...but, like, from another earth."
"So, another version of their dad?" Ben nodded, their hair slowly turning back to its usual purple. "Got it. Cool...um, no pun intended."
"I don't understand," Amaya said. "Leo was a part of our team for a little while. He helped us through Martin's death. If he's here...why won't he talk to us?"
"I say we find him and ask," Nate said.
"What about Catwoman and the VM?" Ben said.
"Eh," Nate shrugged. "I'm sure the others can take care of it."
"Okay, first we need to get out of this crowd," Amaya said. "It's starting to give me a headache."
The three of them pushed through the crowd, until they had returned the abandoned street they'd been walking down before.
"Now...if I was a guy with a super kick ass gun, where would I go?" Nate wondered out loud, trying to think like a Leonard Snart. But before he could process his thoughts too much, someone screamed, their cry raging throughout the streets.
~ Jacksons Samantha ~
Jax walked behind the two girls, giving them some privacy. Normally, he wouldn't have been so laid back about his daughter being with a total stranger, (One who was basically a stalker at that) but something about this girl seemed genuine enough. Somehow he could tell she understood what his daughter was going through.
Three years ago, JJ had made a mistake. She'd gotten drunk. Then, she proceeded to get behind the wheel of a car, resulting a wreck that caused the death of all her best friends.
Jax had only learned the details about the accident a few weeks ago, but he could tell his daughter blamed herself. It tour her up inside, even if she tried to hide it most days. It left her feeling like a monster.
It was true what they say. When a parent's kid hurt, so did the parent. And Jax felt as though a piece of his heart was breaking every time he saw that look in her eyes.
But this girl, Samantha...
Aside from the fact that she was, apparently, the Scarecrow's daughter, Jax didn't know much about her. Though, he could tell something was eating her up inside as well. He just didn't know what.
When the two of them were together, that lifeless look in JJ's eyes disappeared, just for a moment. (Jax couldn't see the other girl's expression, because she always wore sunglasses.) The two just seemed to naturally connect. Samantha seemed to make JJ happy, and that's all Jax wanted for his daughter. For any of his kids.
A couple was standing in the middle of the road, talking to a man in a red coat. Jax guessed they must've been cops. He would have passed them by...if they hadn't been talking about the Legends. (Well, actually they were talking about the Waverider, but it didn't sound as though they knew they were talking about the Waverider.)
"You said there was a...space ship?" the male cop asked the man in the red coat.
"Yeah! Right there. Landed in that parking lot over there," the man in the red coat said. He pointed to the exact spot the Legends had parked their ship.
"Uh...huh," the male cop nodded slowly. "Well, there's nothing there now."
"You think I'm crazy," the man in the red coat frowned. "I saw it! Come on, Babineaux! There's zombies all over Seattle! Aliens can't be too much of a stretch!"
The female cop simply looked at her finger nails, not even paying attention to the conversation.
"Well, we're in the middle of a murder investigation," the male cop, Babineaux, said. "So, when your aliens decide to confess...give us a call."
Babineaux, along with the female cop, walked away from the man in the red coat.
"Did you get anything, Liv?" Babineaux asked her.
"Nope," the female cop, Liv, replied.
Babineaux sighed. "Great. So, we're back to square one."
Liv grinned and clapped her hands together. "Does that mean I have time to go shoe shopping?"
Babineaux looked around, looking rather annoyed. "You know, I almost prefer the rude brains..."
"Oh, Clive, you silly billy," Liv giggled, like that was the most hilarious thing. She pointed to a near by store. "I'm going in there to see about some heels. Call if you need me! Kiss, kiss." She blew fake kisses at the policeman, before skipping off into the store.
Jax shrugged the scene off and moved to keep walking. But before he could get very far, someone screamed.
Liv came back out of the store a second later, a concerned look on her face. JJ and Samantha ran over to Jax. Clive looked around, searching for the source of the noise. It rang out throughout the streets for several minutes. Seemingly, it came from all over. Jax thought it sounded like a murder victim in one of those CSI cop shows.
He turned to the teenage girls beside him. "Wait here!" he told them.
JJ gave him a look. "Seriously? You honestly think -"
Jax cut her off with a stern tone. The 'dad' tone, JJ called it. He didn't use the tone often. Usually, he didn't need to, but now didn't seem like the time to play around. Not when someone was obviously hurt and needed help. "I mean it," he told his daughter. "Stay put!"
Then, he ran off in the direction he thought the scream had come from. From the corner of his eye, he spotted Clive and Liv following him.
"Sir, you need to let the police handle this!" Clive insisted, as they came to a stop.
Jax let his eyes wander to the center of the street, spotting something rather startling. If he hadn't been a Legend for so many years, he probably would have fainted or even crapped himself.
Because, right there in the middle of town, stood a big, red dragon. An actual dragon, like something drug straight out of a fairytale. The thing was at least fifty feet tall, red scales lining its body.
Along its back and shoulders, thick spikes sprouted. The thing's eyes were beat red, fury flashing through them like a flood. Sharp teeth snarled and snapped at anyone who dared venture too close. Steam spewed from its nose. Sharp claws stuck out from its massive paws. The things wing span had to at least be twenty or thirty feet.
Jax gapped at the beast in disbelief. Slowly, he turned to Clive. "Can the police handle something like that?" he asked, pointing at the dragon. Before, the officer could think up a response, the dragon bounced, leaping straight at Jax and the two police workers.
A/N: I have edited this chapter as much as I care to do. I hope it's at least half way decent, now. At least I think it's much better than the first go around. Next chapter we'll see what's going on with Ellie Jo and her crew. Maybe a bit of what's going on with Ethan's bio dad. Perhaps some more with Nora Darhk...and her family
Hope you enjoyed the first chapter of KoL. And I hope you continue to follow the team through out their second book.
That's all for now,
Toodles!
