"I'm so sorry Logan." She says the words, acts the part even pretends to feign off tears. But Logan doesn't buy it. He's watched her the entire summer and he's learned her tells.
"Don't bullshit me Mars." He says coldly rising from his seat on the couch. Their in her house which he thinks is pretty fucking unfair since he'll be the one who'll have to retreat. I mean honestly you'd think she'd at least have the courtesy of doing it somewhere I feel comfortable in..
He's been waiting for this the entire summer. That one voice of reason at the back of his mind never let him forget what the two of them had had. He always knew that eventually she'd go back to Duncan. It was inevitable. It was fucking Duncan! He was her first love, her first fuck and her first god damn knight in shining armor. God he hated him right now but he loathed himself even more.
No wonder she was leaving him.
"I'm not bullshitting you Logan. I'm trying to be honest."
"Because we all know you're so good at the honesty thing don't we?" He sees her flinch. Fuck it, He thinks letting all his restraints go, I don't want this to be a clean break. I want it to be a mess so that even Duncan will have trouble cleaning it up.
"Let's be clear about this Mars you're leaving me for Duncan. Correct?" She looks at the ground avoiding eye contact.
"Logan…I don't want…this isn't about Duncan and Me."
"And yet again bullshit." She looks at him now, square in the eyes her chin pointed at a defiant angle.
"Fine Logan. You want to play it this way?"
"Please" he says the word with more distain than she thought possible.
"I'm leaving you for Duncan." She says it as emotionlessly as she can but she knows Logan. She knows he can see right through her defense mechanisms.
He smiles coldly and she knows it's going to hurt. She knows he is going to make this as miserable as possible.
"Running back to old faithful. I thought you could be at least a little more creative than that V. I mean Lily at least had the courage to think outside the box."
"Don't you dare bring her into this." She says angrily. But Logan just smiles wider. She's playing right into him. She's making it easy for him.
"And why not? Dear Lily's the one that got us into this mess in the first place. I mean if it weren't for her little indiscretions Duncan would just be thinking you were his half sister and I would be happily screwing your best friend. My how the tables have turned now I'm alone and you're screwing my best friend. You are sleeping with him aren't you Mars? I'd be disappointed if a little smooching was all it took for him to steal you away from me."
"I'm not sleeping with Duncan." She says, "Yet."
Now that pisses him off. She's not even using her trade mark snappy remarks. She knows this is enough. She knows how much she means to him. It takes all his self control not to put his fist through the wall. God how pathetic is he?
"Sex with Duncan." He smiles sickeningly "Tell me will you try to recreate the magic of the first night you spent together by reporting him to the police in the morning? Or will fooling around with the entire senior class and then blacking out be enough?"
"You son of a bitch."
She hits him hard. So hard his eyes tear but he knows. He knows he's made this hurt for her as much as it has hurt him.
"That's the spirit Mars." He says quietly. "Now you're sorry."
Logan walks towards the door and just before he reaches it he turns. She looks up at him expecting another jab. But he surprises her.
"You know he doesn't get it." He says "He still thinks you're the old Veronica. The one he used to date. The naïve, sweet girl who was his sister's best friend." Laughing hollowly Logan reaches for the door knob. "Personally I preferred the new you but there's no accounting for taste."
