"Tyson, I think it's you," Max stated. "You guys are best of rivals. And as they say, the best of rivals make the best of friends."
Tyson, however, denied it openly. "No, I am sure it's Ray. Ray is the oldest and the wisest of us. Kai trusts Ray more than us. It must be Ray."
"Guys, I think it's Max. Kai always protects Max when he is in trouble, and also appreciates him from time to time." Ray said.
"But he'd do that with anyone of us."
So they argued and argued, and argued some more. The boys were oblivious to their surroundings.
But Hilary and Kenny were getting more and more annoyed each passing second. Rather, each passing sentence. "Can you get 'em to shut up? My cables hurt," Dizzi whined.
Kenny gave Hilary a pleading look. Hilary had grown a monster sized anime vein on her head. Major trouble ahead, boys.
"STOP ARGUING LIKE WHINEY BRATS AND GO ASK KAI HIMSELF!"
"She just made my wires bleed, chief." complained Dizzi, but was ignored.
But point had been well made. The boys seemed to ponder over it for some time, then nodded, agreeing. They set off to find Kai.
"Finally, some peace," sighed Kenny.
Tyson approached Kai first. "Kai?" He asked. Kai cracked open an eye, only to immediately shut it again due to the harsh glare of the sun. He sat up and took the blade of grass out of his mouth, directly facing them, and raised an eyebrow.
"Ummm... we were wondering, no, arguing over this, but who is your best friend?" Max asked.
Kai seemed to think over it, before smirking slightly and getting up. Dusting the grass strands away, he started walking back top the dojo.
"You'll tell us later?" Ray asked, only to get a nonchalant 'Hn' in reply.
"That worked well," Ray said. Cut down on the sarcasm, Ray.
Kai lay on his bed, flipping idly through the images in his cell. The images of Tala and himself.
'Is Tala my best friend? Possibly. Are the Bladebreakers my friends? Maybe... yes. Best friends? Nope. Not that close. Is Tala's cocky attitude good? Hell, never. So the answer to Max's question is... Tala? Possibly... yes. Tala is my best friend.'
Kai's thoughts were interrupted by Tyson's knocking on the door. "Come in."
"Kai, you have your answer?" Ray asked. "Hn." "And?" Max urged.
"It's Tala, isn't it?" Tyson suddenly asked. He seemed to freeze at the words that left his mouth. Tala? Why hadn't they thought of it earlier? No doubt, it was Tala.
Kai's eyes wore that genuine happy expression when Tyson had said it. "Yes, it's Tala. Despite his cocky attitude and ego the size of Lake Baikal, yes, it's him." Kai said, more to himself than the others. He drifted off into his own oblivious state.
This was when the others decided it was best to not disturb Kai and leave. Max, being the last one to exit, closed the door just in time to hear Kai whisper 'Tala is my best friend' under his breath.
Far away in Russia, a certain wolf woke up from his slumber, with a deep urge to flip through the images in his cell. His eyes rested on a certain image of himself and Kai, both holding up their respective blades after their victory.
'My best friend, Kai...'
A genuine smile lit up his face in the darkness of the night. But what Tala didn't know, was that Kai was doing the same, repeating his actions.
'Together we can do anything... Tala and Kai best friends...'
'Best friends...'
