100 Prompts: Complicated
I've been so busy lately, all I have time for is drabbles. I have 100 themes/prompts but let's see how well I can commit lol.
Jean sat in the farthest corner of the dining hall, just watching everyone from a distance. A scowl played on his lips as everyone seemed so happy, contrasting his bitter state. He wasn't sure what everyone was so cheery about, but whatever it was he did not like it. He scoffed as he brought his cup to his mouth, "Tch, how annoying."
When he lowered the mug he noticed something move to his far left. Mikasa had sat down at the other end of his table. He waited a little bit to go talk to her. Perhaps she was waiting, saving the seats around her for her two knucklehead best friends. After a while though she remained the only one seated in the opposite corner. He surveyed the room for her object of interest to see that he was happily sitting with Reiner and Annie. With a slightly annoyed snarl, Jean slid over to the empty seat across from her.
"Eren-" she looked up hopefully. Her face fell. "Oh, sorry."
Jean's eyebrows came closer together at her reaction. "Were you saving this seat for him?"
When she sadly shook her head he nodded in confirmation, unsure of what to say next. She twiddled with her thumbs, looking down intently at her hands. "What's bothering you?" he finally broke the silence, although he immediately regretted the decision. As if she would tell him what was going on.
She looked up in surprise. He wasn't sure if she was touched that he, Jean Kilstein, was showing genuine concern for her, or if she was annoyed that he, Jean Kilstein, was showing genuine concern for her. Either way the silence was killing him. She looked to her left and his gaze followed. There Eren sat, happy and loud as ever as he was enthusiastically listening to what Reiner had to say. He just couldn't understand why she thought that Jaeger kid deserved her undying devotion. He could give her a simple life after all. Simple love, simple romance, not even half the crap Jaeger gives her.
"Why Eren?" he decided to ask instead.
She smiled sadly, "I don't know, it's complicated, he's complicated." She mumbled a bit too fast. "I guess the same reason you go after me no matter how much you know I love him."
Jean looked back at the table Eren was sitting at. The kid was now standing, arms flailing around as he tried to tell his own story now. He looked at Mikasa again as she sighed a deep, resigned sigh. Then he felt the familiar pang in his chest again.
He sighed. It's complicated.
