Ross looked up from his work when he heard a faint knock on the door.

'Come in' he said and put all his paper work to one side. He looked up and waited for whoever it was to come in.

Demelza slowly opened the door and took a few steps into the library, she gazed around the room before her eyes fell on Ross staring intently at her. She took a few more steps in so she could push the door behind her.

'Sir' she said standing in front of the desk.

'Demelza, what do you want?' he asked

She hesitated. and then walked forward in till her body touched the end of the desk. 'This is for you' she said and put a handful of small coins on the desk in front of him.

Ross looked down at the money she had laid on the desk. 'What is it?' he asked

'Tis my money, for you' she said quietly looking down at her feet

'Why are you giving it to me?' he asked curiously

'Tis yours' she said innocently

Ross go up from his chair and walked around the desk and leaned on the end in front of her.

'Demelza I gave this money to you, your wages for all the work you do, Its yours to keep' he said and picked up the coins.

'No, tis yours for all the food and clothes and bed' she said bringing her face up to look at him.

She looked so innocent and pure in front of him, he was about to smile but then realised what this was about, which angered him

'Demelza, did you father used to take your money?' he asked seriously

'Father used to say that I was his, so everything I had was his too' she told him

Ross almost growled he was angry, although he knew to expect something like that happening it annoyed him. He got up from where he was leaning and stood right in front of her.

He took her arm and turned her palm up so he could place the coins into her hand.

'This is your money, nobody is going to take it from you, nobody owns you, save it and buy yourself something nice' he told her as she pulled her hand back and looked at the little pile.

'You don't own me?, I own me and these little coins' she said not really a question more of a statement. It was times like these Ross looked at her and saw a little girl rather than a young women, Demelza knew so little of the world she was excited by a few coins. Ross nodded.

'Where to put them?' she asked him a big grin on her face

Ross looked around and then went to retrieve a small copper pot from a shelf. 'Here put them in here, and once this is full, you buy something for yourself' he told her 'Promise me' he asked

'Something for me and you?' she asked

'No, nothing for me, I have to much look' he said and watched her eyes travel around the room. 'Promise me you will buy something for yourself, a nice cloak or dress or something like that, okay?' he asked

She nodded and took the pot and dropping her coins into it. She then stood there in front of him.

'Why don't you leave it in here, we'll put it on this shelf' he said and pulled her over to a shelf in the corner where some books where kept. 'and then nobody can take them' he finished watched her put the pot on the shelf.

'Thank you Sir... Ross' she said and curtsied, she then hurried out of the room and went back to her chores.

Ross smiled watching her go, he was fascinated about her excitement over a few coins, and loved to see her learn about how her life had changed. He walked back around to the desk to the window and saw Demelza and Garrick skipping and dancing around each other in the grass.

She was so happy and it made him warm inside knowing that he had made her that happy. He sat back in his chair and thought to himself just how lucky he was to have her in his life.
