A Long Walk Home
Jem, two footsteps ahead
Me, a ham?
A ham…and someone behind us.
"Run!" That was
Jem, and then he is screaming,
I know I'm under the oak tree now
Hurry
Falling, trapped, a moment's regret…
Dumb ham
Crushing me
Can't breathe, can't feel, and
If there's a god out there, maybe
He could offer a little help
Before I join him.
Still can't breathe, trying to fight
Beneath my ham, useless.
And then, God.
And I'm still alive.
