"Luna?"
Ginny's voice cut like a razor through the silent night, causing Luna to flinch uncharacteristically. She was sitting at the edge of the double bed that they shared, staring out of the window into, her moon-like eyes reflecting the constellations that embroidered the navy velvet sky. She turned those hollow eyes to Ginny, seeming to say a hundred words with that single, melancholy gaze.
Ginny stifled a yawn and rubbed her eyes. "Are you okay, baby? It's..." she squinted sleepily at the clock. "It's three a.m."
"I'm aware," Luna murmured, turning her attention back to the sky. "I'm so scared of the nightmares. I've just stopped falling asleep," she added, her voice low.
"Nightmares?" a thousand flashes of cruel green light danced across Ginny's mind, along with the distant echoes of her second home crumbling. "The war was only a few months ago, Luna. You don't have to avoid sleeping - I still have bad dreams."
Ginny saw Luna's vague smile reflect in the glass of the window. "They're not about the war." Luna shifted on the bed so that she no longer stared out of the window, but was instead facing Ginny. "I'm scared...I'm scared of us."
"What do you mean?" asked Ginny in a low tone. She was used to Luna's occasional odd remarks and unusual questions.
Luna sighed. "I've never been in love before." As she said it, her grey eyes seemed to sparkle, suddenly the shiniest shade of silver that Ginny had ever seen. The stars outside behind her might glow as brightly as they did, but Ginny was sure in that moment that Luna's enormous eyes could light up the whole sky. "It's scary," Luna continued, bringing Ginny's attention back. "I loved you through the war...when things were already difficult, so I thought that once Voldemort was dead, everything would become normal. But love...it's so twisted and weird, I love you so much but it fills every single pore in my body, spreads right out to my fingers and toes, and it's unlike anything I've ever felt before. But even though it's so new and unusual...I don't want it to stop."
Ginny stared silently at Luna throughout her speech, allowing her to continue.
"I just...I think maybe...we need some time apart?" Luna's voice was reaching a higher pitch. "Just...to think, maybe."
Ginny placed her hands on Luna's shoulders, staring straight into those mesmerising eyes. "You're breaking up with me?"
"I..." Luna blinked a few times, pushing back tears that threatened to spill. "I think so."
"Give me one reason," Ginny said stoically. "Give me one reason why we should break up."
"Other than the one I just gave you?" Luna challenged.
"That wasn't a reason," hit back Ginny. "Those were feelings. Totally normal feelings." Before Luna could protest, Ginny lunged forwards, pressing her lips softly to Luna's. Surprisingly, Luna was pliable, her responding kisses melting into Ginny's. "I love you, too," Ginny whispered into Luna's mouth hotly. "And we'll fight through those feelings."
Luna smiled into Ginny's mouth. "You are my sun," she murmured, using the nickname that she had adapted for Ginny, referring to the way her hair glowed like the first few precious rays of sunrise, and the remaining ones at sunset.
"And you, my moon," replied Ginny, and they fell back onto the bed together.
