At that moment, time seemed irrelevant.
It didn't matter if I lived for the next thousand years or the next three minutes. The only thing I had to do was keep my legs moving forward, toward a goal I had no desire to reach. In essence, I was throwing myself to the lions for the sakes of the ones I loved. Of course, the lethal beings that lay waiting for me in the wings were much worse than lions - I would have had a better chance taking out an entire pride than I would facing off against one of these monsters. I knew the battle would be over in seconds, if that.
I shook my head to dispel the sudden macabre image of my impending demise. I couldn't let fear incapacitate me now; there was just too much at stake. So instead I used the sudden adrenaline rush to fuel my resolve, to make my legs move quicker. My newborn speed definitely gave me an advantage, but if the enemy had already disposed of my friends, all the speed in the world couldn't help me. I'd just have to hope that the enemy would take their time destroying what was left of my heart.
