AN: Here's my first fanfic for the Darkest Powers series. I wanted to get this out here before The Reckoning came out. lol. I'm defiantly pro Derek! It's finally time for the super popular hottie to take a back seat and give someone more deserving a chance. :] I mean, he's cool, cute, and nice, but only certain girls can see through traits that would have a lot of girls turning the other cheek at a perfect guy hiding behind anti-social behaviors or with a temporary minor physical 'hindrance' like acne. Anyway, hope you like it! Give me some tips and ideas for the future of this story. :D

Mate

Prologue

"So she's progressing well?" A shaky voice asked. Two women were staring into a nursery, watching the occupants with interest. A man in a lab coat glanced over his chart through the glass. A smug smile slid across his face.

"Yes, I believe she most certainly is. She's behaving well, no known side effects, no sightings. I do believe this shall be the last meeting we'll have for some time, as she's received the all clear." The confident man turned back to his clipboard and scribbled a few more notes.

With all nervousness nearly evaporated, the blonde walked over to her companion. "Isn't that- Wait, what's wrong?"

The taller woman was still staring into the nursery, her lips pursed. "Marcel, why is that other subject," she said the word with disgust. "looking at her that way?" Her narrowed gaze was on a dark haired youngster as he sat there, with his eyes not moving from a small toddler playing on the other side of the room.

"Oh, him. Well he's a very peculiar subject…" stated the man, he studied the young boy. "He is the only one of his kind to take to the method of treatment. The rest retain the pack instincts, they fight, and are territorial, but he… he only shows one sign that he's even a-"

"Don't tell me that that monster has shown that she is supposed to be his mate?!" The woman's voice was shrill. The man flinched as she came closer; he had been hoping they wouldn't notice this minor detail.

"W-well… er" he stuttered around trying to think of a way to calm the irrational brunette. "He has shown an immense interest in your little niece, but it doesn't have to mean that-"

"You'd better keep him away from her!" She yelled in the anxious man's face. Her sister came over and tried to calm her, because some of the children were starting to look around to find the source of the noise.

"You're scaring the little ones." The petite woman said in a small calm voice.

"Terry! You don't understand, he's trying to tell us that she's destined to be with that monster!" The woman responded, still irate but in a quieter voice.

"No, it doesn't have to mean that. And besides Chloe won't see that boy again, she's leaving. Today. Right Dr.?" the blonde plead, trying to get this scene over with.

He stared at the pair a moment. "Of course. She's now finished with her experimental period. She shows the greatest success rate of them all. You'll only need to keep administering the medicine once a month, but that should keep her powers under control."

"See Lauren? We can take her home." The mother said, and turned to look at her pride and joy. "You knew coming here was the best solution."

Lauren took one last glance back at the playroom, eyes narrowed. "You'd just better make sure that mutt stays clear of her Davidoff." She gave him a stern look. When he didn't reply, she said, "I mean it."

"We'll make sure to keep that in mind. This will work, she'll be fine and hopefully will be none-the-wiser."
