"33 ayes, 29 nays."
Kurt just stared at his laptop screen, completely slack-jawed.
Blaine's reaction was slightly different. Kurt sat, dumbfounded, as his boyfriend jumped up from the bed, screaming and yelling victoriously, "It passed! It passed! It passed, Kurt!"
And suddenly, a host of visions flashed before his eyes.
Kurt and Blaine had talked about moving to New York after graduating high school. They both felt like they belonged there. But now… now it was different.
Because now… New York could completely, truly be home.
Kurt felt his features crumple as he buried his face in his hands, sobs wracking his body. This was history being made, right in this moment.
Kurt felt himself being pulled into Blaine's strong grasp, felt kisses pressed into his hair, as a chorus of "I love yous" fell from his lips.
Kurt blindly reached up, wrapping his hands around the back of Blaine's neck and pressed his lips hotly against Blaine's. And Kurt thought in that back of his mind that when – not if – but when they got engaged, it really would be the happiest night of his life, because he wouldn't have to worry about being looked down upon, about being treated as a second-class citizen, about his damn rights.
No, he would be able to enjoy the bliss of knowing that he was going to spend his life with the man that he truly, completely, desperately loved.
This was their night. Their victory. It might have been small, but it was theirs.
Kurt whispered "I love you" into Blaine's lips as their tears mingled.
Victory, however small, was theirs tonight.
New York passed the Marriage Equality Bill tonight.
Remember tonight. Treasure it, and always remember that in this moment, love won.
