Magic Moments

Jim Taggart had been saving his money all year for this night.

It was his one year anniversary with Jean and he was determined that it was going to be special. They had all ready been out to dinner at a restaurant and had even been out dancing; now they were in the car once more and Jim had one last surprise for her.

"Jim, this evening was wonderful," she told him, looking over with a smile, "you really shouldn't spoil me like this."

Jim shot her a smile of his own before he turned his attention back to the road, "I wanted to give you a special night...something to remember," he cleared his throat and turned to face her as they stopped at a red light. "Jean, it might not always be like this," he told her seriously, "there will probably be times when I'll be away on a case; times when I can't be there for you." He paused to collect himself, not used to baring his soul like this, "That's why we need to make these memories now, while we can," he explained, turning his attention back to the road as the light turned green.

Jean wasn't sure what to say. She had never been romantic and Jim certainly never had been before. Oh, he'd had his moments, but nothing like this.

"Finally, I find a way to make you speechless," he teased, making Jean laugh.

"Jim, where are you taking me?" she asked after a moment.

"You'll see," was his enigmatic reply.

Knowing that she'd get no other answer from him, Jean turned her attention to the passing scenery; in the dark it all looked so different. She smiled a little to herself as she caught sight of the stars; she'd always loved the night sky.

She was startled from her musings as Jim stopped the car; she looked out of the window in confusion. "A bus shelter?" she asked as Jim opened the car door for her.

"Not just any bus shelter," Jim told her, "this was where I asked you a very important question."

Jean looked at him incredulously, surprised and pleased that he'd remembered.

"Now I've made you speechless twice in one night, now that is something to celebrate," he teased with a wink.

She pursed her lips in mock annoyance, "Why did you bring me here, Jim?" she asked.

He didn't answer; instead he led her wordlessly over to the bench and asked her to sit down. Curious to see where this was going she did as he bid and sat patiently waiting for whatever he had planned.

What he did next was completely unexpected: he took her hand and got down on one knee.

"About two years ago, in this very bus shelter, I asked you to marry me and one year ago, to the day, you did," he began, "but something has always bothered me about all this Jean," he confessed. "I still feel like I didn't do it properly," he said, reaching into his coat pocket and pulling something out, "I would like to rectify that, if you don't mind."

She shook her head, wordlessly.

He revealed the small jewellery box in his hand and she unconsciously held her breath.

"Jean, will you stay married to me?" he asked, opening the box to reveal an engagement ring.

She laughed a little at his question as she took in the sight of the ring, "Jim, it's beautiful," she breathed. She looked up at him, "You didn't have to do this you know," she chided him, smiling.

Jim shrugged, "I know, but I wanted to," he grinned at her, "you still haven't answered my question."

She nodded, "Yes, yes I will stay married to you," she replied with a smile.

Jim smiled as well as he slipped the ring on her finger, next to her wedding band. "I love you Jean," he told her softly.

"I love you too," she replied, just as softly as Jim closed the distance between them and kissed her.
