Prologue

"Aurora, look at me." my father's voice pleaded softly. I bit my bottom lip, not wanting to look up from the grainy, white sing on which we sat. Overhead, seagulls squawked and the waves lapped at our toes. A large hand appeared beneath my chin, gently lifting my head. I sighed as my Mediterranean Sea colored eyes met those of my father's.

"You need to understand the position I'm in right now," he frowned and my eyes gleamed with tears, threatening to spill over. "I would stay with you and your mother if I could."

Pulling my knees to my chest, I nodded dismally. At age fifteen, my father had already been breaking the rules for sticking around so long. I pursed my lips and leaned into is calloused hand, which had been cupping my cheek.

"I don't want you to go." I whined like a small child. He offered me a sad smile and his short beard curled and tangled in the wind, not very different than that of the waves. Glancing briefly at the setting sun, he pursed his lips and stood slowly. I followed suit and was quickly pulled into a hug. Tears flowed down my rosy cheeks as I embraced him back, but I couldn't feel them.

"I love you, Rory." he kissed my forehead softly and in the blink of an eye, he had walked into the ocean and disappeared.

"I love you too.." I whispered quietly to the air, wondering if he could somehow hear me. I had a gut feeling he couldn't. Bringing a hand up to wipe away my tears, I turned my back on the ocean and started to walk back up the beach. And that was the last time I saw Poseidon.
